Outlaw Music Festival on Tour?
The traveling musical circus that is the Outlaw Music Festival gives rootsy music fans of all stripes a special opportunity for some summer fun. Despite the shifting lineup of artists from year to year, Willie Nelson, naturally, is at the center of each show, and when you're watching him perform you're seeing an American treasure in action. But there's a lot more going on at the festival, as fans have found out over the years. The Outlaw stage has hosted the impassioned R&B/folk/blues amalgam of living legend Van Morrison, the blistering blues-rock sounds that turned the Tedeschi Trucks Band into a musical institution, the freewheeling, jam-happy journey of The Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh and many, many others. For fans of Americana-oriented music, it's tough to think of a better way to spend a summer day (and night), and this festival gives as many people as possible that opportunity by taking it in on the road.?
Outlaw Music Festival Background
Spearheaded by no less iconic a figure than Willie Nelson, the Outlaw Music Festival started out in 2016 and turned into an annual shape-shifting celebration of roots-based music's many forms. Dipping into rock, country, folk, blues and bluegrass, the festival has included Alison Krauss, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sturgill Simpson, Van Morrison, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, Phil Lesh and Friends, Robert Plant & The Sensational Shape Shifters, Bonnie Raitt, Counting Crows and plenty more. The Outlaw Village that's a part of each event date gives fans a chance to enjoy local foods and crafts and to commune with fellow music lovers while they're not busy being bowled over by what's happening onstage. Not every artist at The Outlaw Music Festival is American, but they're all profoundly influenced by the many strands of music that make up the Americana tapestry.?
Bought the tickets to see Bob Dylan, then he cancelled. Very huge disappointment. Everyone else was great but it was not what I was looking for when I bought seats up front.
Bob Dylan was canceled. John Mellencamp's voice was horrible. He was humorous, but has that raspy hoarse voice that years of smoking will do to you. Willy Nelson had some good moments, but played wrong notes. I was glad I did not pay full price for the tickets.
So...the concert featured half the artist that were advertised when I purchased my ticket. Very disappointing. And the venue cost a freakin' fortune. $41 for two beers. $11 for a box of popcorn that was too salty to finish. And you had to use a card or put money on a card that was not transferable. No more Darian Lake for me.
We skipped the first performer because we purchased tickets primarily to see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, John Melloncamp was an added bonus but the first two were the real appeal. To have an unknown, (to us), performer replace Dylan was a huge disappointment. It was especially frustrating when there was no explanation given as to why he was not going to be there. John Melloncamp was amazing. He interacted with the audience and played all the songs everyone wanted to hear. Willie was also great. While his voice is not quite what it used to be, no one would expect it to be at 91, he was delightful to listen to and watch his masterful skill on the guitar. A fun night was had by all but just shorter for us since we opted not to watch the first performer.
Great venue! Southern Avenue-great sound&fun! Charley Crockett&$10Band outstanding!! Would see him solo, again and again! Wow! Awesome! Willie Nelson super!!! Such a great opportunity to see a musical superstar! Mellencamp mehhhh-he was good solo for two songs; with his band, well, he sounded like he had a sore, dry, scratchy throat - honestly concerning that he might have a health issue, and off key. Hope he has an ENT. And, Where was Bob Dylan? Some ads listed him on the billboard, some had no-cougar Mellencamp. Feeling very mislead by advertising.
I went to see Dylan, who cancelled. Mellancamp was excellent -- rocked the house with Pink Houses and many others. Did a nice tribute to Dylan with a great version of Watchtower.
John Cougar sounded like he swallowed razor blades. I couldn't understand one word that Dillon said(or sang). Willie's voice was very weak. I'm not sure what I expected out of these old guys but something more than what I got??
In the middle of Willie Nelson singing the trash truck came and was banging a dumpster so you could not hear willie for an entire song. There was a generator running as well so you could not hear the music on the lawn.
First let me say I normally prefer much smaller venues. This one was, as usual, full of constant distractions that detract from what could have been a magical evening. When will they design a Pavillion where the entire row doesn't have to stand up to allow a nonstop stream of bathroom goers through? I mean nonstop. I expect better for $200 a seat. Now, as for the musician's, they were fantastic! Southern Avenue opened. I had never heard of them, but I now have an long playlist of there stuff. They have an R&B rock vibe is that unmatched these days. Charley Crockett was also excellent! He has an amazing back up band that is anchored by a trumpet- playing pianist that is just stellar! I'd seen them before and knew what to expect, and was still blown away. John Mellancamp had the audience singing along to a setlist of nothing but nostalgic hits. It was amazing. He was spot on. Willie Nelson....my God I was so glad to be present for this show! This was the last stop on Willie's tour, and at 91 God only knows how many shows he has left. His voice has lost it's timber, his timing is off more than usual, but none of that matters at all. Willie is amazing! His band and his son, work deftly around him to keep the songs on track. And Mickey Raphael, my hero, continues to add a perfect harmonica accompaniment to complement everything! Overall, if you discount the bathroom parade, this was a magical night!
Loved the venue and concerts overall great experience
