Maria Schneider was amazing. I don't attend a lot of jazz concerts but I listen to a lot of Jazz online and on the radio. She has a style that is very recognizable, we saw her a few years ago at Ojai Music Festival. Her compositions seem to conjure natural settings and animal spirits, with a unique blend of beauty and dissonance which is new and refreshing. Her musicians are first rate and provided very interesting solos and accompaniment. Along with these effects she still manages to produce that baseline jazz feel with plenty of drums and bass.
When you take the best of musical forms and genres, place it the hands of an incredible and imaginative composer, arranger and conductor and have it performed by an orchestra of the most talented of musicians you have Maria Schneider and her Orchestra. One small comment-while in no way did it take away from the performance, I would have preferred to see the members of the orchestra in some form of formal dress. I think the performance and the music deserved it----- Robert Block
