CHRIS POTTER IN CONCERT:
Acclaimed tenor saxophonist Chris Potter first rose the jazz ranks in his early teens, and he continues to be one of the genre's most respected players today. A true musician's musician, Potter combines both technical virtuosity and passionate phrasing, treating fans to performances that are at once impressive and emotional. Seeing him in concert is the next best thing to taking a jazz master class -- from his epic solo on "All the Things You Are" to the frenetic bop of "Anthropology", Potter always surprises and amazes with his rhythmic fluidity and endlessly creative improvising on tour.?
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Chicago-born Chris Potter took up the saxophone while living in Columbia, South Carolina, after hearing the legendary Paul Desmond perform. He was quickly recognized as a prodigy, and by age 13 he was playing professional jazz gigs. After high school he relocated to New York City, where he studied at several prestigious music institutions and made a name for himself performing with bebop icon Red Rodney. After playing in numerous bands, he made his solo debut in 1994 with the album Presenting Chris Potter, which featured respected players like Kevin Hays and Christian McBride. Potter's 1998 album Vertigo was a benchmark success, receiving praise from both Jazziz magazine and The New York Times as one of the year's best jazz albums.? His status as one of the preeminent contemporary tenor saxophonists was further solidified in 1999, when his contributions to Joanne Brackeen's album Pink Elephant Magic earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. A veteran performer who has released 15 albums and played as a sideman on over 150 more, Potter continues to dazzle with his dynamic performances on tour.

It seems like every musician was doing their own solo at the same time rather than in harmony
Awesome ensemble featuring Chris Potter and other talented players.
Potter was one of four saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) on stage, plus piano, bass, and drums. All under the direction of Patrick Zimmerli, who wrote most if not all the music. The compositions were over-the-top brilliant, and these musicians were up to the challenge. Potter was the standout sax and had some stupendous solos, but each was very very good. Piano player brilliant, and great bass and drums. A night to remember. I'd never heard of Zimmerli, checked him out on YouTube and knew I had to go. Glad I did. Jimmy's does a great job of booking acts.
Chris Potter is definitely one of my favorite musicians. He plays more melodically than a lot of the modern players. He plays “out” plenty, but everything is rooted in harmony, not just constant clashing against the chord tones or however you characterize what sax players are doing these days. I had never been to Jimmy’s Jazz Club. I would go back-it looks like they poured a good bit of money into making the old YMCA nice. The food that I saw looked good, although I heard complaints of small portions. I ordered a drink and chocolate beignets-how exciting, right? Well I got the drink, but the beignets never showed up. That was disappointing. Looking at Jimmy’s schedule, I didn’t see any other world class names like Chris Potter, but I will definitely keep an eye out.
Chris never disappoints, amazing musician. Jimmy’s is an amazing venue bringing great talent to the seacoast!
We saw Chris Potter and his trio at Jimmy’s on Congress. We already knew the venue was fantastic, but we had never seen Chris Potter. What a show! These guys played their hearts out without stopping, often rolling from one tune into the next without so much as a breath in between. Just an amazing show, kudos to Chris, Bassist Larry Grenadier and Drummer Eric Harland were terrific, the whole trio was just beyond words. Highly recommend seeing these guys if you ever get the chance!
Jimmy’s needs to figure out how to deal with disruptive patrons.
Chris Potter puts on one of the best live performances I've heard yet. I have had the opportunity to attend many great performances but this performance is among one of my favorites. Chris is a really cool guy and I even got to take a picture with him and got albums autographed!
Chris is a performer that you may not see in Jacksonville any time soon, and having him here is a treat. Also the big band was fun to hear as well as some great local performers.
