We attended the concert as part of a Hilton Experience. Hilton purchased the tickets and we had orchestra seats - very nice! We enjoyed the conductor and thought the orchestra was wonderful. We enjoyed Romantic Meltdown with Pianist Gabriela Martinez very much.
Wonderful performance by the VSO and with a choir. The VSO does a great job and Chrysler Hall is wonderful for the experience.
The Virginia Symphony was wonderful as they always are, but the show was advertised as a Yo-Yo Ma show, and he only came out in the second half of the show and played 3 songs, one of which was the encore. He was also wonderful for what he did play and I'm glad I got to see him, but the songs were more him as a part of the symphony versus hearing just him on the cello. All in all, I was rather disappointed. Glad I didn't pay for the expensive seats.
The performance was excellent, and the voices' sound and quality were great. Job well done!! See you next year.
This was a rescheduled venue due to COVID-19. Unfortunately, the venue was rescheduled to Chrysler Hall where the acoustics are atrocious. The right suspended speaker (looking at the stage from the audience) cut in and out throughout the entire performance. The seats are in need of repair or replacement. The symphony and guest singers were entertaining. Overall it was a good show but the facility (Chrysler Hall) needs serious renovation.
We had no idea that the New York Bee Gees would be with the Symphony. The show exceeded our expectations. Only critique is that the Symphony would have been mixed in a little louder (although we sat on the left side so the sound may have been different if closer to center). Just a joyful experience!
I did not know whether it would also be all classical or a mix with jazz. I loved the first half of the concert. Disappointed that Mr. Marsalis only participated in the first half. The music of the last half was enjoyable but not what I expected. I would have loved to have had a program so I would know what was being played. The opening number from The Marriage of Figaro was the only recognized selection. The time was also short, just a little over 1.5 hours from start to finish; that could have been due to COVID precautions.
The Virginia Symphony orchestra presented a wonderful collection of holiday music to get everyone into the spirit of Christmas. They played all the Christmas favorites and also included a few lesser known songs. Augmenting the orchestra's program were the talents of two guest vocalists, Nick Ziobro and Chesapeake, Virginia's own Aundi Marie Moore and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Moore astounded the audience with her beautiful soprano and incredible range while Ziobro stunned with his jazzy stylings and powerful voice. Young Alice Shoup ably provided the vocals for "Take A Ride With Santa." Overall it was a beautiful evening chock full of music to make you smile and feel the warmth of the season.
The Canadian Band that fronted the orchestra was outstanding. The guitarist and lead singer were especially awesome, as both sounded very close to the Journey musicians they were covering. My only complaint about this band was that the piano player didn't play other keyboards to achieve greater authenticity. However, I suspect that this was done purposefully to give the orchestra something to play. However, they were a poor substitute for the missing electronic keyboards. The orchestra didn't really add anything to the performance and, in fact, on many songs detracted from (and overpowered) the rock band's performance. (For example, the orchestra shouldn't play over the guitarist during his solo.) That is not to take away from the VSO - they are fantastic! However, when they choose a pop band to cover it should be one that uses more orchestral arrangements and instruments (definitely The Beatles and perhaps the Moody Blues). Saw VSO's performance covering the Beatles and they (and the pop band) were awesome!
