University of Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball History
The University of Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team launched in 1906 and spent its initial years as an independent program until forming the Southwest Conference for the 1914–15 season. After logging a 22-1 record under coach Ed Olle, the Longhorns retroactively won their sole National Championship in 1933, as determined by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll. Texas later helped create the Big 12 Conference ahead of the 1996-97 season, and will remain a member until moving to the Southeastern Conference in 2024.
The Longhorns have made 37 tournament appearances and reached the Final Four three times in 1943, 1947 and 2003. Texas has made all but four NCAA Tournaments since 1999. In the Big 12, Texas has led the regular season conference title three times, and won the conference tournament in 2021 and 2023. The Longhorns are currently under the leadership of Rodney Terry.?
Notable Texas alumni include Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, D.J. Augustin, T.J. Ford, Royal Ivey, P.J. Tucker, Jarett Allen and Avery Bradley, who have all continued on to lengthy pro careers. Durant was named Naismith Player of the Year in 2007.
