The Allman Betts Band on Tour
When Devon Allman and Duane Betts come together to carry the torch that their fathers — Gregg and Dickey, respectively — bore for so many years, they do it their own way. Sure, they bring classic Allman Brothers Band tunes like "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," "Jessica," "Midnight Rider" and "Blue Sky" to the stage with a sound and spirit that will make their fathers' fans misty. But this is no tribute act. In addition to breathing new life into the old material, they offer up their own tunes, influenced by old-school Southern rock but bearing an undeniably original feel. And along the way they take songs by other artists, from John Lee Hooker to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and put their own roots-rocking stamp on them. Between Devon's pipes and Duane's guitar, old spirits are conjured in an Allman Betts Band concert, but new fires are stoked as well.?
The Allman Betts Band in Concert
When Gregg Allman passed away in 2017, the loss ended any chance for the Allman Brothers Band to ever take the stage again. But two men found a way to move the spirit of the ABB into a new era. These musicians are an undeniable part of the band's legacy even though they were never actually members of the band. Gregg's son Devon Allman joined forces with Duane Betts, son of legendary Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts, to form The Allman Betts Band. Devon's soulful voice and Duane's fiery guitar work represent the next chapter in a Southern rock story that started with their parents back in Georgia in the late 1960s. There's even a third Allman Brothers Band offspring in the Allman Betts Band — Berry Oakley Jr., whose dad was the former's founding bassist. Those who mourn the Allman Brothers Band will find cause to rejoice in The Allman Betts Band, as not just a rekindling of old memories but a powerful path forward.?
They are a must see, you will not be disappointed.
Allman Betts brought their best. This is the third time we’ve seen them at The Birchmere, which is a great venue to have their music rock you. As long as they return to the DC area, we’ll be there!
This is a truly great band. Devon and Duane performed separately a couple of each of their solo bests. Those were good and the songs they performed together from their albums were even better. They did a few Allman Brothers originals. The notes in every song, especially those in Jessica, were clear and emotionally moving. I definitely recommend them if you like southern rock, and my husband and I will try to see them again any time they are available to us.
I was so pleased that both Sons inherited their fathers voices and musical talent. Excellent show, will attend again when they come back to town.
While their Allman Bros covers were expected, and great, this band is a dynamo in their own right! Excellent musicianship, great original music in the bluesy country-gospel infused Allman tradition. Glad I saw them here because they won't be playing small venues for long!
I was in the front row at the Birchmere and it was my first time seeing them. They were fantastic. Their music touched my soul.
They rocked the Birchmere and put on one of the best shows ever ????????????
As expected Allman Betts Band was full of talented musicians in addition to Devon Allman and Duane Betts. JD Simo was also very good as the first performer this night. Allman Betts played some really good renditions of Allman Bros favorites and they have some of their own material that is also very good. It seems they only tour as Allman Betts periodically between other projects so go see the band if you get the chance. As far as the Northern VA, DC and MD suburbs around DC if you see an artist you like playing at the Birchmere, go see them there. Great sound, intimate venue seats 500, hard to beat. Kind of hard to get to right now from Montgomery County due to the GW Parkway construction but worth it. Just allow extra time and be ready to take alternate routes.
I really enjoyed seeing those guys. I’m a decades + long Allman Brothers fan and to see them carry on - just like their Dads - was very special. I did double takes many times thinking I was back in time. Made me feel young again! Can’t wait to see them again. Really good mix of new and old. Thank you Allman Betts Band!!!!!!
We really love this band. The venue was awesome also. It has to be your kind of music so he just gave it a shot and loved it.
