Awesome show and would see again. Loved the venue.
Pete Yorn is one of my favorite singer/sonwriters.. Been following him since he was an opening act for Semisonic back in 2001. He is a true indie artist. His music is thoughtful, authentic, organic and catchy all at once. If you are looking for a highly produced show go elsewhere. Pete is the real deal (think James Taylor type singer/songwriter.) His new cd The Hard Way is a lovely album. His band is excellent, particularly the lead guitgrist. Pete connects to his audience. On Your Side and The Man were standout songs. If you get a chance go see this talented artist!
Pete’s voice was in great shape. I’ve seen him on a number of occasions since early 2000’sand this was my favorite show in about a decade. Well done, Pete. The Hard Way is a great listen, too!
I was a Pete Yorn fan already and appreciate him as a singer and songwriter. Never saw him live until this week, amazing concert and appreciate him even more now! He shared his journey to marriage, having a daughter and ending his drinking. His passion and outlet of his music is clear and beautiful.
XL Live is a great venue, and it was an awesome experience.
As per usual , Pete performed in his casual yet intense manner and wowed the crowd. His lyrics are beautifully sung. Cover songs are just as amazing as well. Voice is right back atcha like it was 15 years ago. Venue amazing, shout out to the So. Cal Sound Benefest for organizing everything. Ticketmaster made it a breeze as well!
Overall the concert was good - how could it not be with Jackson Browne. Not to diminish the fact that the other bands are local artists and not professionals, they could have been much better. There are so many talented musicians in the valley. I had never heard of any of them, so didn't know what to expect. First two groups were not particularly good. The group of girls (JEMs I think) had great harmonies and would see them again. The last artist, the "headliner"- didn't care for him and left before his set was over Supported the station and that was the goal and it was a night out.
I am a member of 88.5 KCSN and do donate to them frequently. When I saw that they were doing a Benefit Show (aka Benefest) at the Alex Theater in Glendale (CA), I jumped on getting a ticket for myself. I had multiple reasons for getting the ticket--1. Supporting the station to keep them on the air, 2. The fantastic line-up (more on that!) and 3. I grew up in Glendale and used to go to the movies at the Alex while it was still a movie theater, complete with a balcony--which was closed up due to the "bad behavior"of Glendale's young people. It was important for me to get a ticket in the balcony, which I did. The view was fantastic and allowed me an unencumbered view of the artists who performed onstage. (I was in row AA). All performers were great!!! I found Jade Bird to be not only extremely talented, but someone with an infectious laugh and bubbly personality that had me grinning like a fool throughout most of her performance! Cayucos' stage presence wasn't quite as personable, but their harmonies could not be faulted. JEMS was the night's third offering and they didn't disappoint! Previous to the concert, I had not heard of them before and was anxious to hear what they would do. WOW! I felt they sounded a little like The Wailin' Jennys, but definitely had their own style and delivery. Gotta say--I really liked them!!! More please! Totally blown away with act #4. He was added after the first four artists had been announced and oh boy--Jackson Browne did not disappoint. He was in great voice and perhaps other people were disappointed that he didn't do the familiar songs like "Running on Empty"et al, but I was stoked that he chose four songs that were definitely deep cuts and for a true Jackson Browne fan, left us wanting more, but satisfied. And now, the headliner, Pete Yorn. He came out and stood there for a moment, shaking his head saying--what is this? I should not be coming out after Jackson Browne! He did perform his set--a little gravelly at first, but got into the songs and really showed "his stuff"when his friend and former bandmate came out and played the piano with him. It was a great night, glad to see all the bands, glad to help KCSN and so very glad to see all my old haunts and heh, heh get to be sitting in the balcony!!
Such a great show - intimate and informal. Sound was great, music was phenomenal. Anyone who can get on stage by themself with just a guitar and knock it out of the park is a true talent.
I thought I was going to see Jackson Brown. But it was a benefit for an NPR radio station. I should have checked closer so it’s my fault. They had four performers who I thought were very average and then Jackson brown came on and did four songs and left. Very disappointing evening.
