Was in L.A. for 4-day/3-evening vacation from Wichita, KS - this evening at the Hollywood Bowl will never be forgotten. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the whole experience of attending the event at this venue.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Rachmanoff's Rhapsody made me cry!
by RedKathy on 8/29/11Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodI have waited years to hear this piece of music live. I finally got to hear it at the Hollywood Bowl; what was special as well was that my older son went to hear the performance as well. Olga Kern was amazing, she seemed like such a humble person as the audience was applauding her.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Carter, Rachmaninoff, and Brahms
by Palf on 8/28/11Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodThe soloist, Olga Kern, and the orchestra during the Rachmaninoff piece were wonderful and the audience responded with the commensurate enthusiasm, giving rise to a light, brief encore by Kern. However, the choices of music by Carter and Brahms were a letdown. They were uninspiring and non-melodic. The people obviously want familiar, melodic music. They responded to these pieces with somewhat unenthusiastic applause, although the orchestra and conductor executed the music well. We were hoping to hear an encore after the Brahms music, but the audience failed to demand it., I feel, because of their disappointment in the musical choices.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 8/27/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood Ms. Kern gave a powerful performance and was most imptessive.

Rating: 4 out of 5 good concert
by Jlp75005 on 8/26/11Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodLiszt concerto, Watts playing was amazing. Prelude was excellent. The second part, dedicated to Ravel, was not at the same level.
Rating: 4 out of 5 White-Knuckle Ride
by Anonymous on 8/25/11Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodSlatkin and Watts! Wowser! The concert opened with Liszt's Les Preludes. Very well done. Then Andre Watts came out and pounded away at the Liszt Piano Concerto #2. Extremely heavy-handed. I suffered through it in anticipation of the second half of the concert, which consisted of some of my faves. The Ravel Mother Goose Suite was perfect, and I was transported back in time to my days as a student at Juilliard, when we played that piece in the orchestra. Then came Dapnis and Chloe Suite #2. Everything was going along splendidly until the conductor, Leonard Slatkin, made a terrible mistake. He conducted in 4/4 instead of 5/4, and the whole thing nearly went in the ditch! Entrances were botched, the orchestra started coming apart in sections, as I gasped in horror, gripping the bench in front of me until my knuckles turned white. Professional musicians that they are, the orchestra members took matters into their own hands, and order was restored. Whew!!
Rating: 5 out of 5 A Little On the Awesome Side
by LASaguaro on 8/25/11Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodThis concert was a little on the awesome side if you ask me. Slatkin was just amazing. Andre Watts was incredible. He played with the strength and insight that that young Chinese virtuoso who played the Rachmaninoff 3rd piano concerto completely lacked. The orchestra was tight and vibrant.
