Kirk Franklin has stood at the cutting edge of contemporary gospel music for over three decades, from his platinum-selling 1993 debut album Kirk Franklin and the Family to his crossover collaborations with Kanye West, Tori Kelly and Lil Baby. As a child, the Texas native displayed prodigious musical chops, learning piano at age four, receiving his first recording contract offer at seven and serving as his adult church choir’s music director at 11 years old. In 1992, Franklin assembled a 17-person choir dubbed “The Family,” and together the group released five albums and collected three Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2000. Two years later, Franklin unveiled his solo debut, The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin, which debuted at a solo career-best No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Starting with his 2005 follow-up Hero, Franklin has won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album for five consecutive solo studio releases, along with awards for singles like 2015’s “Wanna Be Happy?” and 2019’s “Love Theory.” In 2023, he shared three Grammy wins with Maverick City Music for their joint live album Kingdom Book One.
