My partner and I love the Black Pumas and were excited to see them for the second time. Every musician and vocalist in the group is SO talented, and we were not disappointed by the quality of music they played, but rather by the set list. We expected the overall vibe to be more "chill"than other groups we've seen live, but the balance of slow to upbeat songs was way off. I think the only song the crowd really danced to was "Ice Cream", otherwise a LOT of the audience participation that was requested by the group seemed to be trying to force the audience compensate for the moving and grooving we wouldn't be doing otherwise. The group has a far better range of tempos than we saw with this set.
Honestly? After an opener that I'll describe as promising but odd, a lull of almost an HOUR between opener and main artist, and a set list that was starting to bore us, we left before the show ended, along with several other audience members. If you're already going to start a show at 8pm on a Friday after most folks have worked all day, the audience is going to have a better time (and give the entertainer the energy they want) if the show isn't peaking when audiences are normally crawling into bed. Compound this with a set list of slow jams, and you aren't going to have an audience that walks away wanting to see you perform again.
Another specific grievance was the prolonged use of strobing lights at the audience during the performance. This is not the first concert we've attended (tickets were purchased through TM) where there was NOT clear warning that there would be use of strobe lights during the performance before or after we purchased the tickets. I think the lights flashed at the audience for 90-120 seconds nonstop during one song, the act of which can cause migraines for people (like my partner). I wish there was clearer communication from performers and ticket sellers about the potentially dangerous lighting used during live performances, especially BEFORE the tickets have been purchased.
