Some people bought tickets to the show with the belief that “Weird Al” Yankovic would be performing all his greatest parody songs, but that’s not what the tour is all about. As Weird Al put it, “It’ll be filled with my not so popular songs.” But that’s a matter of perspective because, in my mind, there are no unpopular songs from Weird Al Yankovic.
The show opened with Weird Al’s guitarist, Jim “Kimo” West, playing a few solo slack key songs that’s popular with Hawaii residents, and the last song was accompanied with a hula dance by…OMG, I forgot her name, I’m so sorry. But anyways, everyone loved it.
Special guest comedian Emo Phillips came up next; his first performance in Hawaii since 1995. He was such a delight to see perform standup and got the entire audience laughing. I hope Emo Phillips comes back very soon.
And then the man of the hour…Weird Al Yankovic, accompanied with band mates: on guitar, Jim “Kimo” West; on drums, Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz; on keyboard, Rubén Valtierra. The only person missing was bassist Steve Jay who had a medical emergency the day of the show, so Weird Al had Steve’s son Miles fly in from LA to Honolulu and arrived an hour before the show. They played a number of songs to the delight of the crowd for a little over 2 hours.
Since I had bought a VIP package, among the souvenirs I got were: a VIP pass tour lanyard, Al’s brand of Jackson Park Espresso medium roast coffee and coffee can, a Weird Al coffee mug, photo op with Weird Al, and a signed tour poster (which can be substituted for one personal item).
Overall, this was a dream come true. I’ve been a fan of Weird Al since 1988 and one of my goals on my bucket list was to see him perform live. Now that goal has been achieved. Mahalo, Weird Al, Emo Phillips and the entire band for making this one of my most memorable nights.
