It's incredible that they took a 20 year hiatus as singer Matt Johnson said, since they are playing and performing so well. They don't have new material, but it's great to hear the songs from their under-appreciated old albums. The musicians in the band are pretty incredible and he was in good voice.
Matt Johnson and TheThe delivered an epic performance at The Hollywood Palladium. Matt’s voice sounds older, deeper and wiser. The re-imagined songs sounded great and the band played them brilliantly with so much soul.
Long-time fan, first time seeing The The in concert. Despite Matt having a cold, they sounded amazing, great energy and video visuals. EXCELLENCE MUSICIANSHIP! Hollywood Palladium has a lovely sound. I was on ground level, both center stage near front, and later off to the side near back of the room. Standing only venue (wear comfty shoes)! <No video to upload, Matt of The The implored audience to put away their phones and not to record the show. I respected his wishes.> Opener was a 4-female European band with two cello, percussion and guitar. Music genre hard to define (Game of Thrones meets indie rock?) Very good. Wish I knew that band's name.
Been waiting years to see them again and they didn't disappoint. Really good line up. Amazing how prophetic many of the lyrics he wrote back them have come to fruition now. Would have preferred if they had played more songs from Soul Mining, Infected or Mind Bomb though
I'm so excited I got to see them! They were great!!!
Great set list. Took me back to my party days in azusa.
Nobody like Matt Johnson - what an unbelievable show! Band sounded great. I love the venue in terms of seat quality (no bad seats really) and architecture. The only thing I didn't like was that since everyone had seats many chose to sit through songs which kinda drained the energy levels. Other than that it was great.
look forward to the concert for years and was really disappointed with the show. Band seemed tired with little energy. I saw them 30years ago and it was one of the best concert I have attended. Not this time.
The show was great and Matt Johnson did not let us down. I’ve been waiting my lifetime to see him (The The) perform and my wishes finally came true! :). A show I will not forget!
I've liked Matt and his band since the early 80's and have wanted to see him live ever since. I finally got to and it did not disappoint! The current lineup is smokin and the show was really great. It was a career retrospective with a little something from each album. Any true The The fan should go!
By far, one of the best concerts I have been too. Matt Johnson is phenomenal live!
Backed by one of the tightest backup bands I think I've ever seen- Matt johnson still has it! Clever songwriting, and one of the deepest soul voices since Barry white. This Is a tour where they play the hits- not promoting a new album...
Amazing! It was just as good as lastbtime they were in Toronto.
Matt Johnson's concert was subtle and nuanced much of the time, played like consummate jazz, with the song performances and the tension built up via numerous clever techniques (instead of just stepping up the tempo or the aggression of the playing, et cetera), and exploding into anthemic rock only selectively and dishing up gut-satisfying rapture. Every moment of the music stirred my soul. There were probably some in the audience who didn't fully appreciate all the understated elements, but even they could tell they were in the presence of something holy, something that almost makes you believe in god. During the glorious piano lead on Uncertain Smile, which despite the fact that reality has its limits was even more stupendous and joyous than the Jools Holland original, I was bathed in sonic ecstasy, something I don't experience all that often anymore. I was grateful to the core for the sensation. And my rambling doesn't even begin to get into the kaleidoscope of memories and feelings that cascaded over me throughout the magical performance. I've had some good times in my day, and Matt Johnson. provided the ideal soundtrack.
Like a fine whiskey, Matt Johnson's voice is smokey and silkier than ever. The The played a solid 2 hour set and didn't disappoint on what songs were chosen. It's not a surprise that all articles reviewing this show have been raving. Matt was personable and enthusiastic onstage. I only wish I was able to take time off to travel and see each US show. The Orpheum Theater has seen better days. It's shabbiness lends well to the rock shows it hosts. Not the worst of theaters to see a show but at times the sound was off... I think more due to the sound engineer rather than the venue. To be honest though, I'm such a fan girl of The The that they could play the dumpiest dump and I would still be happy.
As a huge TheThe fan, I was incredibly disappointed in the show. The band made sure to say they reworked all of the songs so that they didn't sound like the album and they weren't lying. Most of the songs weren't even recognizable. If they didn't like the songs then why were they out there playing them? It felt like they didn't want to be there and were only collecting a paycheck. There was little enthusiasm until the last few songs when the tempo finally picked up. Maybe it's too much to expect to hear some semblance of these cherished songs? I've seen other bands from the eighties and most seem to still love those songs. TheThe seemed like hated them One song wasn't even really played, he just talked through it. just awful.
Seriously awed at the beauty of The Beacon: it was my first time there and I was stunned at its decor and architectural details. The venue was also really well organised, and I've been listening to The The at least once a month for the last 27 years so it was a dream to see them live. They stuck quite closely to the album songs so I didn't quite get the feel of a live gig in some ways, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I will be back!
Solid. Pros. TIGHT! Did not disappoint. Exceeded even my high expectations. BraFNvo!
It may have been 16 years since the last time the played but they were right on the money. Great show. Really tight. My only complaint is with the behavior of some of the crowd. Can’t these venues start to put in a “no conversations” rule? I mean yelling “hey do you want a beer?” Is ok, but “hey let me tell you the story of my whole life right now while the headliner is playing....”. I paid to see the The. Not the douche behind me.
