The Longest Johns on Tour
What started as a group of friends singing sea shanties in their kitchen has quickly become an international sensation. At least that's the story behind Bristol-based a capella folk group The Longest Johns. Crowds can expect to be transported to a maritime state of mind, with lyrics and vocal harmonies that pay homage to a life lived on the open sea. The group's salty spirit and unusual folks tunes, now backed by a full instrumental section, hearken back to the sailors of yore. After a rapid rise to success, the band of four friends is bringing their catchy, viral sea shanties stateside on the Smoke & Oakum Tour 2022. So make sure to hoist a beverage, grab tickets and sing along with hits from the group's fourth studio album, 2022's Smoke & Oakum.
The Longest Johns Live in Concert
The Longest Johns was formed seemingly on a whim one night by friends Josh Bowker, Andy Yates, Jonathaon Darley, and Dave Robinson. After an evening of singing sea shanties at a friend's barbecue in 2012, the Bristol-based group decided they should make their favorite pastime official. Branding themselves as an a capella folk shanty group, The Longest Johns released their debut EP, Bones in the Ocean, in 2013. They quickly earned a warm reception from local fans and were invited to perform at the 2015 Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival. In 2016, the group released their debut album, Written in Salt, followed by Between Wind and Water in 2018. The track "Wellerman" was included in the second album and would later turn into a viral hit in 2021. The Longest Johns added a new dimension to their performances in 2020 with the addition of instruments on the release of their third studio album, Cures What Ails Ya. In 2021, "Wellerman" gained viral international attention, and the band signed with Decca Records. The Longest Johns released their fourth album, Smoke & Oakum, in 2022, accompanied by a global tour of the same name.

I went to their last show in Montreal as well, but this was something entirely bigger. It was at least 4 times as many people. The song selection was great, as was the crowd. It was also a delight to see Sean perform again. The sheer amount of hype in the room was amazing. Highlights for me were Moby Duck, Mutiny, Bones in the Ocean, and Retirement Song.
Great Show, from the music to the stage performance. Very generous repertoire shared, already waiting for their return to Quebec
The music was great, as someone who backed the album on Kickstarter I was really excited to see it live in person.
I've been going through a rough patch recently, and for an entire evening I was able to forget my troubles and just have a great time. My throat was hoarse from yelling and my hand got a bruise from clapping. Made a six hour drive to come see the show and it was 100% worth it!
This was an awesome concert experience. I love their music and getting into the concert was super smooth. My one complaint is that it was a little too rock focused for me and I prefer the softer voices only versions of their songs. The sound balance was also quite a bit off. It was impossible to hear the lyrics as the drums were too loud. The sound overall did not resonate well in the Atlanta hall. But overall I had an amazing time and would come to another one of their concerts.
I've been to multiple concerts before. Some big, some small. I have never been to a concert so engaging. As a huge fan of Longest Johns (I've been listening for 9 years), I've always wanted to see them live. Once I had the opportunity, I bought the tickets last minute as a splurge for myself. My mother is also a huge TLJ fan, so I got her tickets and we had a great time. The concert was amazing. All the beat drops you hear in the songs, multiply that by 10 in person. The music resonates with you. They are also super personable and genuine. That's what makes TLJ so loved. Opening for The Longest Johns was Sean Dagher. What a treat! Sean Dagher is so amazing, I would also drive hours just to see a concert of his. He engages with the audience and wants you to sing along. If you have played Assassin's Creed, you've probably heard his voice. Regardless, check him out as well. His Shanty of the Week series on YouTube is very fun to watch! After the concert, we were able to get pictures with The Longest Johns and Sean Dagher. It was amazing, and definitely a memory I will cherish. I also got myself some merch. If you are able to attend a concert of theirs, buy your front row tickets now! If you are unable to attend, change your plans and attend anyways! You definitely will enjoy the show.
Honestly they put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. They were engaging, clear and incredibly talented. They clearly loved what they were doing, and were enjoying it just as much as we were. I went with a group and we all agreed we would be attending another show next time we have the chance, even if it meant travelling. So much fun.
One of the better concerts I've been to. Even with one of the band members stuck across the pond due to visa issues they played great and even did a meet and greet for the whole venue after the show. Will definitely see them again next time they're in the States.
Fun, high-energy, humorous, and insanely talented. This group has the best vocal blend for harmonies I've heard. And that's just vocals. Andy's banjo performance is at bullet-train level, while JD's guitar generously fills and smartly leads, sometimes at the same time. Add the antics of the dancing bassist Anto and Rich with his effortless drums-- what more could you ask for? Robbie was missing due to an international travel snafu, but a lucky late substitution by Home Free's Adam Chance kept the harmonies going and added a dash of welcome unpredictability. Definitely no surprise they're selling out shows months in advance! If you get the chance to see them, don't miss it.
