Experimental five-piece Squid are making elastic, kinetic songs brimming with ideas that push at the outer limits of contemporary music.
Part of a new generation of incendiary English guitar bands, Squid’s debut album on Warp Records, Bright Green Field, delivered a collection of cathartic tracks that offer surprising plot twists, intricate arrangements and punchdrunk melodies. Cementing the band’s reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to arrive in years, the album garnered perfect scores from several publications and high praise from The Observer, The Times, The Quietus, New Yorker, Pitchfork and NPR Music.
Squid songs are constantly in a state of flux, setting up intensely rhythmic grooves with lean riffs or phrases that unravel into glorious mayhem and carefully orchestrated meltdowns. In spite of the dystopian tensions at play, their songs are simultaneously thrillingly idiosyncratic and infectiously catchy.
“The English band’s nervy debut blazes through scraps of jazz, funk, krautrock, dub, and punk. More than a canonized style, it’s their level of control that sets them apart.” - Pitchfork
"Dissolving borders of materiality and lucidity is a recurring bit on the album. These threads are sometimes pulled so hard that the music itself begins to unravel into wondrous mayhem."
?- New Yorker
“The guitarist delivered barbed lines and outbursts of scrabbling chords; the keyboardist chose piercing, nagging tones; the band shared dissonant odd-meter vamps or locked into compulsive, motoric repetitions. Songs about feeling thwarted and controlled fought back, furiously.”
- New York Times
Fabulous band really enjoyed seeing them, they are unique and quirky. I would see them again. Can’t wait!
Excellent performance! Stellar song delivery and transitions between songs were beautifully done. Water From Your Eyes was a great opening Band that paired perfectly with Squid. GO!
Great sound from the opener and main act. Loved this band for several years and somehow didn't know the main singer is the drummer! This is probably the first show I've been to where I never wanted it to end!
Best show I've been to in, well, ever? They were just so much fun. So much energy. Small venue in Boston so I dont expect much in terms of music levels. But damn I'll be seeing them again as soon as they're close.
That was probably the most energetic ive seen the brighton music hall. Squid definitely brought their A game.
The bass drowned out the usual clever instrumentation of this excellent band. I blame the venue sound possibly. Couldn’t even hear the horn. Terrible acoustics. I love Squid and have seen them live elsewhere and shows were night and day.
Squid was even better than I was expecting. So full of energy, leaving everything on stage, just high on their own creativity and living fully in the moment. If they get big—and they deserve it!—this tour will be legendary, as in "I saw them at the Bowery Ballroom! Where you can dance!"
An absolutely amazing concert, great energy from the band, venue was clean, audience was fun to be apart if
What an unbelievably talented group of people, their live shows are insanely engaging and sound phenomenal. I'll definitely be seeing them again next time they're in town.
Such a fun band. Great sounds and perfect mixing. Can’t wait for their next US tour.
