Horsegirl is composed of Penelope Lowenstein (guitar/vocals), Nora Cheng (guitar/vocals) and Gigi Reece (drums/vocals). The Chicago trio is known for their nostalgic melodies and playful, tongue-in-cheek lyrics.
Horsegirl was formed in Chicago in 2019 when the three friends discovered their mutual love of music. In a 2021 interview with Loud and Quiet, Lowenstein described how they came up with the band's name: "I thought of Horsegirl because of the girls who like horses, like with the really long hair."?
In April 2021, Horsegirl signed to indie label Matador Records. That same year, they released their debut EP Ballroom Dance Scene / Sea Life Sandwich Boy, which showcased their diverse influences, from '80s post-punk icons like Joy Division to contemporary indie rock acts like Snail Mail. The first vinyl pressing of their debut EP sold out almost immediately, and was followed by a number of high-profile performances, including sets at Metro Chicago and the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2021.
Horsegirl's acclaimed debut album, Versions of Modern Performance, was released on June 3, 2022, with many praising the band's poetic lyrics and inventive sound.
