San Jose Earthquakes History
The San Jose Earthquakes trace back to the San Jose Clash, one of the 10 original Major League Soccer teams. In a gesture honoring the long history of the city’s former NASL soccer franchise, the name changed to the Earthquakes by the end of the '90s.
The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003. The team claimed their first Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in 2005, and earned their second in 2012 at the height of their “Goonies Era,” which has lived on in Quakes fan culture. The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die."?
In 2023, the Earthquakes hired former San Jose forward Luchi Gonzalez as head coach. Gonzalez has adopted a style of play referred to as “Luchi Ball,” which emphasizes possession and counter-pressing, and the Earthquakes subsequently qualified for their first playoff berth since 2020.

San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park
In the early days of MLS, the Earthquakes played in San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. Today they play in PayPal Park, a privately financed, soccer-specific stadium that features a player tracking system similar to the one used by the Quakes' Bay Area neighbors, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
Quakes fan culture developed heavily during the team’s mid-’10s “Goonies Era.” The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die" as a nod to The Goonies characters’ famous catchphrase.
The San Jose Earthquakes’ 2024 regular season kicks off in February at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, when the Earthquakes face off against FC Dallas. San Jose hosts their home opener against the LA Galaxy on March 2. The Earthquakes play their final match of the regular season at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California against Western Conference rivals Los Angeles FC. We enjoyed another fun soccer match at Stanford. Great energy, fun vibe, and stunning fireworks display. We try to attend this event (the Classico) each year to cheer on the Quakes. It's a great family event and/or enjoyable date night. Bring the sunscreen!
I go to a game a year with a couple friends and really look forward to the intimate park and the food. This year the pregame and in game music that was played over the speakers was so loud. I couldn’t even really speak with a friend sitting two seats over. My brother put in his ear plugs and I wished I had some. Turn the volume down so you don’t ruin our hearing. Ridiculous.
But someone please tell the Earthquakes to turn down the PA cacophony! We got their early, maybe 45 minutes before the match started, and wanted to have some pleasant conversation. Well, forget about it. We were seated right next to each other and my voice got hoarse trying to talk loud enough to be heard. Sign language or white boards recommended for casual conversation. Senseless and irritating!
It was the most boring game to watch… it honestly felt like I was watching a practice!!
Very good stadium design and easy to get in and out of it. Great atmosphere and concessions. My grandson enjoyed his birthday present attending the game and the team played well. My only complaint is excessive cost of parking ($32). I realise we are a captured audience but that is too much. Would be better if there was public transport access.
1st time at a Quakes game. Great venue. Awesome craft beer selection, if you can find it. Just a lot of fun. Just wish they would’ve won.
The Venue was dope, the team on the other hand was mediocre at best. Surprised of the score, I don’t know how we got a victory against LAFC. John fisher needs to invest more into the team.

San Jose Quakes vs LAFC at Levi’s Stadium: this event was so much fun! The venue is perfect with plenty of food, drinks, and bathrooms. We will definitely go again!
It was just okay. I really miss the having someone annouce and have replays, cheers, games, etc.
