AT THE DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY, everything is changing... and anything is possible. Direct from a sold-out extended run at the Kennedy Center, RAGTIME The Musical returns to Broadway in an acclaimed new production that’s as ravishing as it is relevant. Set in a volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, RAGTIME weaves together three distinctly American tales -- that of a stifled suburban mother, an inventive Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician -- united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Their compelling stories intertwine to form a rich tapestry of hopes and dreams, struggles and triumphs, rhythm and rhyme, set to an epic, Tony Award?-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. A colossal stage show based on the classic E. L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME also features a Tony Award-winning book by Terrence McNally, direction and choreography by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, and a vibrant cast.
Excellent, outstanding talent. Parallels the current issues going on in our Country. Great performance. Thank you.
We have seen two large scale productions of this show. One was in a local theater and the other was at Niagara on the Lake which had all the bells and whistles that a major professional production can bring to the table. This production stands up to either one of them. The Cain Park theater is small and in the round. The production was essentially done on a bare stage with an upright piano serving in a number of uses. Any visual loss is more than made up for by the closeness of the actors to the audience. This allows them to convey the emotions of their characters in a manner that is impossible to project in a 1500 seat theater. There was not a weak link anywhere in the cast and the orchestral support was spot on. Add to that the fairly modest price structure and the ambiance of a center city park and you have one of the best theater values we have experienced.
Props were terrible. Production disappointing. Singing was very good but it was difficult to get the concept of the play because it was just so chopped up. Would never see it again and would not recommend.
The cast was phenomenal!!!! This is a show not to miss!!!
Ragtime was amazing. They were very creative with how they utilize the space they are working with. This really shows how life was for many different cultures at that time. All the separate stories did intertwine with each other. The singing was amazing and heartfelt. This made you feel so many different emotions. I am very happy I was able to see this. I am planning to see it again. Very happy with the performance and performers.
Did not like it from the beginning. It jumped around there didn't seem to be a cohesive story line. The sound was bad but the costumes were good. We didn't even wait for intermission, we left half way thorough the first act (which is something we never do!). We are season ticket holders and have been for several years, this was one of the worst shows we have seen. Very disappointed!
This production was done very well - very similar to the event I saw on Broadway. Vocals were wonderful, costumes and scenery done very well. So glad they came to Illinois! The Coronado Theater was beautiful!
The show was great. The actors gave an amazing performance. This is a classic that still pertains to today's society.
Excellent performance by the actors, but it was difficult to understand the spoken and sung words, presumably due to issues with the sound mixing. I was surprised with the overall theme of the play, having arrived with no prior knowledge of this work. . .it is not all fun and musical games.
The production was well done. The actors were fantastic! The sound system was another story. Many of the actors were hard to hear and/or understand when speaking and singing. Don't know if the problem was their microphone head sets, sound equipment, the sound control person, or the venue (we have attended many similar events in the Tennessee Theatre and never experienced this problem before).
