Having previously seen Genesis tribute band Musical Box, I was looking forward to seeing Rael in the cozy confines of the Vogel. The experience was decidedly less than satisfying though, as the stellar performance of the guitarist, bassist, keyboardist & drummer were torpedoed by a singer not up to the challenge of emulating the vocal gymnastics of Peter Gabriel. To be fair, he had a few good moments, and it's clear he loves the material. And no one could fault him for the energy he brought to the stage. But... for the most part, listening to him trying to force his voice to go places it simply couldn't reach was almost literally painful. The climax of the epic "Supper's Ready"was especially cringe-worthy. Fortunately, there were significantly fewer people left to cringe by that point, as a fair number fled the premises during intermission. (The theater, not sold out to begin with, appeared half-empty by the end.) Maybe he's usually brilliant, and Friday was just "one of those nights". It happens. The other musicians on stage were terrific. If they were to come back with a different vocalist, I would probably go see them again. I give the four of them 5 stars. (There was also a female vocalist who performed on the Peter Gabriel solo material in the 2nd half of the concert, but I honestly couldn't tell you how she sounded. By then I was trying to ignore the vocals. Sadly, it didn't work.) But with the current singer, you couldn't pay me to sit through another show. He gets 1 star. If you're hungry for Genesis music, especially from the early Peter Gabriel era, go see Musical Box. Avoid this band like the Giant Hogweed.
