The University of North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball team competed for the first time during the 1974–75 season. Among the team’s 30 appearances in Women’s March Madness, the Tar Heels have won the National Championship once in 1994 and advanced to the Final Four on three occasions. North Carolina Tar Heels at Carmichael Arena
Carmichael Arena, or “Blue Heaven,” has deep roots in the history of UNC athletics. Opened as the Carmichael Auditorium in 1965, the 6,822-seat venue shares a wall with the basketball team’s previous facility at Woollen Gymnasium. Carmichael Arena served as the joint home court for the men’s and women’s basketball teams until 1986, and it continues to house the women’s basketball team as well as UNC volleyball, women's gymnastics and wrestling. Its low, domed ceiling and steel-beam framework design allow for greater sound reverberations, heightening sound levels, giving Carmichael Arena one of the best home-court advantages in all of college basketball.
