NEKROMANTIX IN CONCERT:
For more than two decades, Danish psychobilly outfit Nekromantix has been conjuring up a unique and macabre brand of horror-themed rock and roll that’s earned them a devoted cult following. At their live shows the group strikes a humorously morbid tone, treating ticket buyers to classic romps like “Horny in a Hearse” and “Nice Day for a Resurrection” as frontman Kim Nekroman sings and plays his iconic coffin-shaped double bass with wild-eyed energy. The band’s breakneck tempos come courtesy of drummer Lux, whose blistering beats provide the scaffolding for Nekroman’s lockstep basslines and guitarist Francisco Mesa’s arpeggiated riffs. Whether they’re playing songs off their 1989 debut or tearing through cuts from 2011’s What Happens in Hell, Stays in Hell, Nekromantix always deliver a rollicking concert experience full of witty lyrics, razor-sharp playing, and spectacular showmanship.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Nekromantix was formed in Copenhagen in 1989 by Kim Nekroman, an ex-navy submarine radio operator with a love of rockabilly. He taught himself to sing and play double bass, self-constructing the “coffinbass” that has since become a hallmark of the Nekromantix live show. After playing their first psychobilly festival in Germany the band earned a deal with Tombstone Records and released their 1989 debut album Hellbound. Their rise from the dead continued with 1991’s Curse of the Coffin and 1994’s Brought Back to Life, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Heavy Metal Album. By the mid-‘90s the band had achieved cult fame in the US, and in 2000 they gave their first stateside performance at New York City’s Rockabilly Rumble festival. They signed to Los Angeles-based label Hellcat Records, releasing their 2002 album Return of the Loving Dead on the label and relocating to LA soon after. Since then the band has continued to release deliciously raucous and cleverly titled albums like 2007’s Life Is a Grave & I Dig It! while touring extensively, bringing their unique combination of humorous horror and rockabilly rhythms to fans around the globe.
I Love Nekromantix! They are amazing and I can’t get enough ??
For reference, I go to a lot of live shows and I have to admit, Nekromantix was pretty electric as far as energy and performance. The setlist was a nice variety of old and newer, but the cherry on top of a great night was closing the show with Who Killed the Cheerleader, which got the audience at peak excitement. I would love to see them again, such a fun show
The bands were great. And the location was awesome, didn’t feel like they oversold
Love Nekromantix! Always puts on a great show! Love that some concerts are all ages, my kids enjoy going as well!
