I missed Mr. Patinkin when he was in Nova Scotia so I traveled to San Diego to see him. I was seated in the theatee expectantly at 40 minutes before curtains up. I was surprised when the concert started late and Mr. Patinkin had to perform as audience members continued to be seated. I was embarrassed for everyone involved and a bit frustrated. Mr Patinkin curated a selection that had some narrative intent which was disrupted by the casual approach of many audience members. Enough of that! Mr Patinkin was wonderful. I was glad I traveled the 5 thousand kilometeres to see him. The pieces I didn't know were evocative of the Era they represented. A real showman, he delivered with humor and emotional depth. A welcomed reprieve from the ervasive tragedy in the world.
I first saw Mandy Patinkin in "Sunday in the Park with George"on Broadway. What a show! Since then I've seen him in movies and on television - have always loved him. I enjoyed his banter with the latecomers and cellphone users - funny! I would have appreciated his introducing the songs as he went along rather than narrating a list at the end - and maybe learning why he chose these particular pieces. I recognize the enormous effort it took to hold a stage for 90+ minutes with no break - he is amazing! Still I wondered if he was all right ...
After waiting weeks in anticipation, I expected the enthusiasm and power of volume. He kept the audience involved with power of personality, but his voice is no longer the clean, clear, on-pitch instrument of yore, having much of the quaver of age rather than "vibrato"of youth. He and accompanist worked well together (obviously well-rehearsed and used to a certain routine set of interactions). In one way, his rumpled casualness of clothing was a reflection of his downward slide. Overall: it was very good, but not the "great"experience I hoped for.
It was Mandy! He always delivers. I saw him 32 years ago. This was a very different concert and equally as wonderful. He is a masterful story teller and so real. If I hadn't already been in love with him, I surely would have fallen in love this time!
This was the third time I had seen MP in concert. He is still a star with immense talent with terrific energy. However, that profanity was used (too many times) detracted from the quality of the show.
Mr. Mandy is a wonderful performer that give his all on stage. His heart is out for everyone to connect with and he envelops the room in his stories and moments. His thoughtful layout and choice of songs were a delight -i just wish he posted them online so we can find those songs if we want them! High rec to see him live if you can.
Mandy Patinkin’s almost two hour stage cabaret presentation was the living embodiment of the word Hamish. For those that don’t know this Yiddish word, the literal translation of heimish is “home-ish.” And that’s precisely what it means — but it’s also so much more! It means homey, cozy, familiar, casual. “Mach zich heimish” means, “Make yourself at home.” Heimish (pronounced HAY-mish or HY-mish) or heimishe (with that extra Yiddish syllable of oomph at the end). Patinkin puts the audience at ease, welcoming them to his home, teasing and cajoling the audience to take their seats, quiet their phones and poking fun at the late comers; all with a flair of sincere mischievousness in his eyes. He knows what he is about to do and surely doesn’t want anyone to miss it. The fact is, you will laugh and cry, and be so engaged with his performance that you will feel like he is your newest best friend. The man is a treasure, a rare and gifted storyteller, singer, and interpreter of lyric poetry found in his nuanced selection of tunes, from early vaudeville to the works of Steven Sondheim. Standing at the piano sheepishly, he then casts his eyes out to the audience or up into the air looking for distant memories or inspiration from the muse he brings with him. His strength as a singer is powerful and sweet. His display of musical talent is awesome. He plays with metaphors, enjoys gags such as a hand help megaphone, and dances or sways to embody the likes of Charlie Chaplin or a sexy tango dancer. He reminisces about school days, family, and professional accomplishments without bragging showing decent humility. By the end of the show, he has you locked into your seat. A Yiddish version of Over the Rainbow was presented as an encore as this was the 31st anniversary of the San Diego Jewish Arts Festival. In making the theater his home, and spending time with this incredible person who reminded us that children watch and learn from us adults. In the days since I have often reflected on the impact of this world traveled, experienced “Hamishe” guy. An effective potion for what ills ails you. He is one for the ages for sure!
Wonderful concert. Patinkin is warm, smart, has a beautiful voice, & funny! He was the best. I’d go again, even if it was the exact same content.
Mandy is a musical theatre icon and we had the night of our lives. Charming repertoire and a special evening with magical artistry.
