LOS STRAIGHTJACKETS IN CONCERT:
Instrumental surf rockers Los Straitjackets serve up their infectious riffs with unstoppable energy and a quirky sense of humor in concert. The fun starts the moment the band takes the stage wearing Mexican wrestling masks paired with matching black suits, and it never lets up as they tear into their sets of memorable originals interspersed with instrumental rock staples and classic TV theme songs. Bobbing their heads to the back beat and dancing together like a well-oiled machine, guitarists Danny Amis and Eddie Angel break out surfer riffs and rockabilly solos with tons of twangy flavor. Los Straitjackets’ punchy flair on standouts like “Tempest”, “Crime Scene”, and “Casbah” never fails to get ticket buyers feeling their idiosyncratic and fun-loving surf-a-billy beat.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Eddie Angel and Danny Amis formed The Straitjackets in 1988, but parted ways when the project failed to gain serious traction. They reunited in 1994 under the name Los Straitjackets and won an immediate cult following with their musical chemistry, tight performances, and trademark Mexican wrestling masks. They released their debut album The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straightjackets the following year before embarking on a regional tour. Beginning in 1997 they reached a wider audience with regular appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, which in turn helped them land a role as the house band in the 2000 indie movie Psycho Beach Party. While the group has thrilled listeners over the course of 13 studios albums—including 2012’s Jet Set—nothing compares to the wild look and throwback sound that Los Straightjackets deliver live.
Always great to see this band perform. The music style is a take back to a better time. Can't wait for the next show.
New fan of this band. Wish I had been sooner. Fun band- good music
This show was amazing. These three bands together bring their talent and fun to the stage in an all around great show. Definitely recommend any of these bands. I've seen Los Straitjackets many times and they are well worth any distance I've traveled to see them. I love the solo of Mr. Sugar Balls during Sing, Sing, Sing.
The three bands at this event (in order of appearance) were the Fleshtones, Southern Culture On The Skids, and Los Straitjackets. As always, the Straitjackets were excellent followed closely by S.C.O.T.S. However, the Fleshtones, who I had never heard before, were an extreme disappointment! These mature "musicians" were essentially a high-school garage band that never grew up. Their music lacked any degree of sophistication in composition and was almost child-like with regard to their use of lyrics. Unfortunately, they happened to be the first band on stage, so I could not leave the premises. Apparently they must have a very skillful agent, as most venues would not be likely to hire such a band based on a demo CD alone. Despite the Fleshtones, the rest of the show was excellent and demonstrated true musical talent.
What a great show! Southern Culture on the Skids and Los Straitjackets were amazing! Ritz Carlton as a surprise guest! Dancing zombies! Fried chicken! Tons of fun!
My girlfriend (and now wife) told me about this guitar band that I would LOVE! I am a closet guitar FREAK, and since the best way to describe these guys is "surf guitar", I thought it would be GREAT to see them....then she started to tell me about the Mexican Wrestling masks...and the shows...and I thought "how odd"..... A few months later my wife had some friends give her tickets as they could not go to a show and talked me into going..."It's free" she said..what do you have to lose....I agreed and we went to 1st Ave in Mpls to see them... Within 5 min I was a FAN! These guys are GREAT! The atmosphere of the show was FUN and as players they are GREAT! Imagine Dick Dale....or the Trashmen.....if you know or enjoy their music...you will love these guys! As I continue to go to different shows....I have become fans of the Pontani Sisters, Big Sandy, and Deke Dickerson! All people they have played with and ALL great artists! All I can say...JUST GO to a SHOW! You WILL leave with a smile!
Great show. Opening act sucked though. It was a comedian who wasn't the least bit funny....
