An experience I won't soon forget!
by Hannah on 3/13/19Somerville Theatre - SomervilleI first heard of Habib Koite nearly 8 years ago as a high school student. Living in a very rural area, my classmates and I didn't have much of a perspective of the world outside our small town. My Humanities teacher made it a point to expose us to art, music, writings, and ideologies of people from places unlike our own. One of the most memorable classes was one in which we watched the full Acoustic Africa in Concert DVD (including music from Afel Bocoum, Habib Koité, and Oliver Mtukudzi). We talked about the music of Mali, it's consonance, and how it was one of the most universally loved music styles. Moved by the incredible sounds, my best friend and I begged our teacher after class to let us borrow a copy of the DVD so we could save it onto our computers. I've listened to the album for the past few years in both happy times and sad times, to uplift my low spirits and to align with my high spirits. It's been a real comfort. Last week, the night before my 25th birthday, I was able to see Habib Koite in concert at the Somerville Theatre. It was truly an unforgettable experience!
