Georgetown Hoyas History
The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team first played in 1907. Independent for much of its existence, Georgetown became a founding member of the Big East Conference in 1979. The Hoyas have made 31 NCAA Tournament appearances, advanced to five Final Fours and won one championship, in 1984. The 1984 championship team, led by the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Patrick Ewing, made history as the first Big East team to claim the title, while head coach John Thompson Jr. became the first Black head coach in Division I men's basketball to win a national championship.?
As the Georgetown coach between 1972 and 1999, Thompson oversaw the nascent careers of future Basketball Hall of Fame players Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson, and was inducted as a coach himself in 1999. Other notable alumni of the basketball program include former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and U.S. Congressman Henry Hyde. Thompson’s son, John Thompson III, also served as head coach between 2004 and 2017, followed by Ewing until 2023.
In the Big East, the Hoyas have claimed 10 regular season titles as well as nine conference tournament championships. Many of the team’s rivalries are rooted against fellow Big East founders, such as the Syracuse Orange and UConn Huskies, though the former departed after a major conference realignment in 2013. At games, prepare to hear the cheer “Hoya Saxa” (Latin for “What Rocks”) and keep an eye out for their real dog mascot, Jack the Bulldog.

We had a fun time & UConn won! Parking was easy, everyone was helpful and courteous
Experience at capital one for college bball is always bad. No college sports should be played there, it’s always so empty. More UConn fans than gtown fans at the game. If you want a real college bball experience in the DMV go to literally any other college game
Great game and seats! My family enjoyed it. Awesome view of the court and a lot of entertainment.
Only about 10% of the concession stands were open, the lines were over 30 minutes long, and they ran out of basic items.
I am originally from Philadelphia, so that was one of the reasons I attended the game, but also the rivalry history btw the schools I grew up watching.
Seats were great and the atmosphere was great even though they lost the game.
After looking to purchase tickets… I thinking we got good seats only to get there… they are rolls of plenty of better seats down in front of us which remains empty seats thought out the game! what’s that about? Hoyas fan!
Everything was like it was suppose to be. No issues at all.
Back to back days in the Capital One Arena. Great game! Great venue! We’ll be back!
