Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was so genuine and personable. Such a great storyteller, with a wonderful sense of humor. I'm very grateful that Dr. Gates, decided to put ASU on his itinerary!
Professor Henry Lewis Gates is better in person than he is in "Finding Your Roots"!!! I was able to attend the VIP reception for him prior to the evening's presentation. He is just as kind and animated in person as he is on the air. Genealogy is clearly a passion for him, and I so appreciate his work! I found that some of the interesting elements of the search for my own roots are a common thread among many of the seekers of family histories. He enabled me to step back and see my own story as part of a larger population movement at a particular time. An amazing perspective.
I'm sure it was a good conversation but, last two or three rows couldn't hear it.
Absolutely loved the stories that "Skip" shared. I never miss an episode of Finding Your Roots and pretty neat to know how it all came to be.
Fantastic evening how Dr Gates was able to get “Finding your Roots”started. The Dean of the journalism school was a great moderator bringing out details about Dr Gates life and career. Very funny hearing Dr Gates comment on how he approached his interviews for scholarships and telling his parents his success.
The sound system was not good. Perhaps you could improve that. We missed about 10%-15% of the dialog. And we enjoyed the program immensly so were bummed to not have heard it all.
I was so thrilled to see Dr. Gates was coming to Gammage (Phoenix) that I immediately purchased tickets. Because one of my friends had just had surgery, I chose seats where she could have an aisle. I didn’t realize this allowed a meet and greet. Dr. Gates could not have been more gracious with his time to chat. Once inside, his manner to tell his journey to how the show and DNA has progressed. The stories were very interesting, he was quite funny and self-deprecating. I wish we had more time to hear more stories. My experience of watching the PBS show has brought a pride of women. No matter what ethnicity, women seem to be the backbone of most families. It is something that we should really appreciate. Secondly, I learned more history through these shows (and stories) than I ever have (and I’m 61 years of age). I firmly believe these shows should be studied in elementary / middle schools. So much better than reading it from a page (although I believe these shows will cause so much interest, they will seek out more information through reading/research). It would most definitely bring a rounder picture to how we all, in many ways, are the same. Thank you for all that you bring to us.
The Gammage sound system needs improvement, particularly the microphone used for Dr. Gates.
Dr HL Gates is a gem. He is a valuable communicator today and brings everyone together reminding all of us about our origins. He is an asset. He was funny and is a great story teller. The problem was the audio. He and the interviewer were at times difficult to hear. There was often static and audio feedback. I sat in the middle of the facility and I often heard others ask their partner 'what did he say'? Had the presenter been anyone else, I might have left early. I would definitely pay to hear him again, but only at a different facility.
