Great music and singing, poor staging
by Lew on 2/8/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoPutting the orchestra on the stage is very distracting. Music may be beautiful, but it is background. Costuming was ridiculous. Don Giovanni is an aristocrat, but he and Leporelli were dressed like a pair of punk hoodlums. Zerlina dressed and acted like a little chippy who happily jumps in bed with anyone who asks her. Modern directors love to update staging and costuming: sometimes it works, this time it failed. One operagoers opinion.
