DAWES IN CONCERT:
Folk-rockers Dawes have picked up the mantle laid down by elite rock and roll storytellers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Frontman Taylor Goldsmith forges his own legend with his powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and passionate songwriting. The rest of the band fleshes out his masterpieces, starting with the propulsive drumming and falsetto backing vocals of brother Griffin Goldsmith. Tay Strathairn throws in elegiac keyboard flourishes, while bassist Wylie Gerber drops in smooth melodies on the low end. Ticket buyers will love the nods to classic rock, country, and folk, even as Dawes brings their own contemporary flare to stages across North America.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The roots of Los Angeles folk-rockers Dawes lie in the post-punk band Simon Dawes, the high school project of vocalists/guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills. The group grew to include Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’s brother Griffin on drums, though Mills left shortly after their 2006 debut Carnivore. As the sole voice and songwriter in the band, Goldsmith regrouped and added keyboardist Alex Casnoff. Rechristened as Dawes, the group began to explore a more folk-oriented sound with their 2009 debut North Hills, which was praised by critics for its unique and refreshing blend of familiar folk elements. The band made their national television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the following year before kicking off a co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper. Before the release of their 2013 album Stories Don’t End, Tay Strathairn replaced Casnoff on keys and added an even more dynamic sound to the group’s roster. In 2015 Dawes issued their fourth album All Your Favorite Bands, an acclaimed release that has cemented Dawes as a group to watch for both their stellar recorded output and their passionate live performances.

Beautiful venue but unfortunately Dawes was sick which resulted in lower energy than usual
Always fabulous performances from this great group! I’ve seen them many times and even in this small not sold out venue they gave a great performance. Loved the new material and can’t wait to hear entire new album. Taylor is a marvelous singer songwriter who constantly inspires me to keep writing my own songs. I hope to see them again soon!! May they stay together!!!
The band did not disappoint. They played everything we wanted to hear and gave us some new tune to love
This was my second time seeing Dawes at this venue. The show was great, as usual. This is the nicest venue I am fortunate to live next to. Beautiful setting with awesome sound. Staff is nice and helpful.
Fantastic show tonight! Taylor and brother Griffin were spectacular as usual. I was a bit concerned know they had lost two members, bass and keys, but the new members were terrific and filled in admirably. Also, Lucius provide great harmonies on Dawes songs, and they played awesome songs as well. Now a Lucius fan too. What's more, the band played some lesser songs, perhaps ones that would benefit from the added female harmony of Lucius. Missed songs like, Somewhere along the Way, Things Happen, We're All Gonna Die, and A Little Bit of Everything to name a few. I loved the opening and closer being cover songs. That Floyd, Sine on You Crazy Diamond song really popped, drums came in perfectly, and the end song of Cocker version of With A Little Help from my friends was life affirming. I can't wait to see if/when Taylor and Griffin get new members and the next album. Hopefully won't be too long. I actually purchase CD and vinyl of all their albums, not a bad record in the lot.
Loved the show Dawes and Luscius played so well together. They are all very talented. So glad we went. The venue seemed a bit lacking. They really went out of the way to keep making money on things. Early entry, seats and expensive drinks.
Dawes did not disappoint. The tag team , trading songs with Lucius worked surprisingly well. Great, tight sound, but bass and bass drum mic were a bit overpowering. Had to really listen to pick out great harmonies and soloing. All in all , fabulous. Was concerned because just lost keyboard and bass player, so wasn’t sure about overall sound, but new bass player and keyboard were top notch. Hope they find a permanent solution and start making another record,… I actually purchase both vinyl and CD offerings.
Lucius and Dawes were fantastic. Performances especially great on the quieter acoustic songs. However, on louder, rocking songs, the sound levels were turned too high and were distorting. Folks at venue said sound was controlled by band, so I won't blame venue. I'm old and half deaf so it is rare that things are too loud for me, but initially thought I'd have to leave. Then I found the sound better in the pit in front of the stage as that was a bit out of the way of the PA stacks.
We really enjoyed the show and the band sounded great. The only downside is Dawes played very few of their own songs. The covers and Lucius songs were good, but not as good. When you go to see a band, you hope to hear a large majority of their songs. It was an odd setlist, but we still enjoyed it.
Great venue, great band, great music!!! The tricked me with “A little bit of everything” riff that I thought was going to lead somewhere, regrettably it didn’t, but still a great time.
Good acoustics and loved the combination of the two bands. When they played a certain song and the whole crowd went silent that’s when it showed they did their job by keeping us engaged.
Dawes - The Capitol Theatre 12/29/23 Stories Don't End Sometimes, a night doesn't turn out like you think it will. A friend who had urged me to get tickets to Dawes became sick at the last minute - and no subs were available. The thought of bailing never really occurred to me. I went anyway and was rewarded for the effort with a beautiful and soul-affirming evening. Billed as the 10th anniversary of the Dawes album 'Stories Don't End', Dawes put on a fantastic show last night at the Cap. The band played that album in its entirety to begin the show. If you aren't familiar with Dawes, their songs feature meaningful lyrics and stories to attach to their stellar musicianship. This album in particular is rich with exceptional lyrics, and it was great to hear the songs stretched out live. Highlights from the album included "From A Window Seat", "Most People"and the Blake Mills cover "Hey Lover". During the introduction for "Most People", lead singer Taylor Goldsmith expressed his infinite gratitude for the "mythical, iconic"Capitol Theatre. "Most People" And she thinks, "Most people don't talk enough about how lucky they are Most people don't know what it takes for me to get through the day Most people don't talk enough about the love in their hearts" But she doesn't know most people feel that same way Goldsmith told the crowd how nice it was to revisit the older material, some of which (such as the title track) hadn't been played live in years. If you think of seeing Dawes, their live show will not disappoint you. I was more familiar with their studio work and was immensely pleased with the variety of the live show, and the musical talents of the band. Whether you connect with lyrics or notes, fancy guitar work or heartfelt ballads, Dawes show delivers. The setlist for the evening can be found here. After finishing the album, the band took a short break, then came back to play a five-song set of their other material, including fan favorites "A Little Bit of Everything"and "When My Time Comes". The closer "All Your Favorite Bands"delivers songwriting gold, and what one can only wish for their loved ones and concert friends into the New Year, and always. "I hope the world sees the same person that you always were to me And may all your favorite bands stay together".
Wow, what a great show. 1st Capitol Theater is the best place to see a show in the tri-state area. The opener Annika Bennett was amazing, a great new artist that has so much of a future. Then Dawes was great as usual. They are even better live than they are in studio recordings. Great crowd. So much fun.

Really loved the show. Wasn’t sure that I’d like the format, but it was really great. Surprise intermission, but came back with a fantastic ending…
Whoever was responsible for the sound screwed up and didn’t fix it until after the 2nd song. That’s equals about 20 mins of sitting through unpleasantness. Also, I now think Dawes is a much better studio band generally. At least I didn’t spend a ton of money.
Incredible concert - I’ve seen them several times - this was the best, hearing them play their seminal album in full. The band was in fabulous form, and Taylor was magnetic! Rock On!
The Dawes, Stories Don't End, show at the Capitol Theatre on 12/29/23 was absolutely perfect. Taylor Goldsmith and the band performed the full album in the first half of the show and expertly captured all of their original passion within each of the melodies. The vocals were crisp, clear, and strong. The band's instrumental performance was classic, energetic, and representative of the 2013 album, which can be difficult as artists (and follower's taste) evolve with time and experience. It was a special experience hearing the entire album live after treasuring so many of the tracks over the last decade. The second half of the show was a compilation of new and old tracks showing off Goldsmith's rich vocals and emotional story telling style. No one left the Capitol that evening feeling unmoved. Thank you to the Capitol for staying true to it's American music roots, to Dawes for promoting the youthful and inspirational artist Annika Bennett, and to Goldsmith for continuing to deliver on his passion. We will always appreciate and treasure these experiences. Peace and happiness in the New Year, to all.
What a terrific show, the band was in great form, seeming to sincerely enjoy themselves and appreciate the audience. This was a celebration for the 10th anniversary of “Stories Don’t End”, which they performed in the entirety then took a short break followed by additional songs. The Capitol is always a fine venue but for this show in particular the sound was fantastic, beautiful balanced and crystal clear vocals.
