The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert
Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.
For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.
In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.
In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."
This was an incredible concert with fabulous musicians, lighting, and song selection. Mr. Dodd had a great voice and definitely performed a fantastic show! Loved it!!
The whole evening was great. This BJS production was amazing! Steve Dodd nailed it!
This was our third Black Jacket Symphony and this time featured songs by Elton John. The performances were spot on, and so well performed! It was a very entertaining evening and I so appreciate the talented performers who made the night so fun!
This was a very unexpected amazing experience of both musical and vocal talent! I went hoping for a pleasant evening and instead was blown away by the artists' performance. The vocals were spot on with the lights and other musicians were perfectly in sync. I couldn't have had more fun. This is worth every penny! If they come to your town don't miss it!
Just loved the Elton John evening with Black Jacket! Very talented musicians! The lead singer has an amazing voice! Your pianist is excellent!!
This was a great show. I can't believe how much they sounded JUST LIKE Elton John. I will be going to the next show, Van Halen 1984. I just can't imagine that they can sound just like Elton John, and David Lee Roth! I have not been able to go to the previous shows here, the Eagles and Journey but I heard from everyone the shows were awesome. Very talented to be able to adjust your sound for these different artists. I really enjoyed that they included the greatests hits, since many songs on that album were unknown to me. The sound was remarkable!
They were great! I was a little lost the first half b/c I only knew the first song of that set but then the second-half came and we all were singing along and enjoying every minute of it. They were all incredible musicians!! Thx for coming to Grand Junction.
This was our first Black Jacket Symphony featuring Elton John. Let me tell you, it was fabulous! There were several in the band that we had seen before, but the new lead singer from Atlanta was absolutely amazing! His voice was crystal clear and even with unfamiliar tunes, you could understand every word. If you have the chance to see them, buy your tickets now!
We saw the Elton John Madman Across the Water show. I’ve seen Elton John over 30 times in concert and I enjoyed this show very much! The singer didn’t do a kitschy Elton impression but had a strong voice and captured the spirit of Elton. The band was fantastic. I’ve also seen their Prince show and that too was terrific. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to any of their shows!
The Elton John Madman Across the Water show was excellent just like every other Black Jacket performance that I have attended. The attention to detail and the high qualty of the muscians never disappoints. I am glad that they are keeping the music alive and maintaining the artistic integrity of the original artists. Thank you Black Jacket Symphony!
I have a friend that has been talking this group up for a couple years and finally checked them out in Atlanta. While I heard a few spots that were off a little, they did Zeppelin proud. All the band members full of energy and all very good musicians. Didn't know it, but they change staff to match the albums they are playing. Well worth seeing them if they are playing an album you enjoy...
What an amazing show! The talent these musicians brought to this show was incredible. The vocals too! By the end of the show everyone was dancing and singing and wanted more!
I have seen many cover bands and this was by far the best. I will definitely be back for the other bands they cover. Loved it and highly recommend.
BACK IN THE WINTER OF 1969 I ATTENDED ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS THAT I HAVE EVER WITNESSED AT THE BOSTON TEA PARTY AND IT WAS THE FIRST TOUR BY A NEW BRITISH BAND LED ZEPPLIN WHO'S BASIC CLAIM TO FAME WAS THEIR LEAD GUITARIST JIMMY PAIGE, ONE OF THE GREAT GUITARISTS OF THE YARDBIRDS. THEY BLEW THE ROOF OFF THAT OLD WAREHOUSE AND THIS TRIBUTE BAND, THE BLACK JACKET SYMPHONY, DID THE SAME IN THEIR FIRST SHOW AT THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY HALL. THE GROUP WAS TIGHT, AMAZINGLY SO CONSIDERING THIS WAS THEIR FIRST PERFORMANCE! THE LEAD VOCALIST DID A FANTASTIC JOB BRINGING TO LIFE LEAD LED ZEPPLIN'S PRICIPAL INSTRUMENT THE VOCALS OF ROBERT PLANT. IT BROUGHT BACK 55-YEAR-OLD MEMORIES I DIDN'T THINK WERE POSSIBLE!
A really good production great sound wasn’t too loud. I did a great job of making you think you were watching Led Zeppelin can’t wait to see him do changes in latitudes changes and attitudes.
A totally unexpected evening of LED Zep pleasure. The lead singer and lead guitarist were ourstanding - consumate professionals who produced a superb performance - brilliant !
Madman Across the Water is a great album. They hit it spot on. Very entertaining show.
We love to experience Black Jacket Symphony. We haven’t missed a show in 1.5 years every time they are in our area. We’ve enjoyed every show.
It was great. One of the best. If you closed your eyes you would have thought that it was Elton John!
I enjoyed this concert, especially the “Greatest Hits” after intermission! Such high energy musicality from most talented artists!! This was an entertaining night!!
