Formed in 1993 at the world-renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, Apocalyptica began life as a loving, lo-fi nod to Metallica from four classically-trained musicians. The project would take on a life of its own when they finally released Plays Metallica By Four Cellos in 1996.?
Unbeknownst to Apocalyptica, they'd just boarded a rocket ship that would propel them through eight rapturously received records, a staggering six million records sold, and a relentless touring schedule.
And it was on the anniversary - when the band's debut turned 25 - that an idea came about. The result was a sonic love-letter - an album they'd simply title Plays Metallica, Vol. 2, and the passion poured into the recording project is plain to hear and see.?
Judging by the deep cuts and recent highlights making up Apocalyptica's ninth album, this is no mere best-of. It would see them featuring Rob Trujillo on a storming rendition of thrash classic The Four Horsemen as a lead single, followed by a stunning rendition The Unforgiven II taken from Metallica's 1997 release, Reload. For their third single, the band released a unique reimagining of One, taken from Metallica's 1988 landmark ...And Justice For All.? Featuring Metallica frontman James Hetfield voicing a spoken-word rendition of those inimitable, now immortal lyrics, it stands as far more than a unique collaboration. It is nothing short of history in the making.

Everything from the observatory, the three bands to the great beer. This venue was amazing and I cannot wait to see, hopefully all three together again, when they come back to San Diego!!
The songs were amazing with great energy from all three bands that played that day. Good stuff!
Apocalyptica was incredible. The talent, creativity, showmanship and technical skills made for a thoroughly exciting show! I took my 20 yr old daughter and these guys made another generation of fan. The opening bands were top notch! Leprous was fantastic and energetic. Wheel was genuine and put on a solid show. They met fans after the show and were very cool.
Great place, very Organized and amazing atmospher!!
Listening to their albums and hearing it described, I would not have believed the show. What an incredible performance. Every song was so well done and the energy was incredible. They are great performers and clearly enjoy doing live shows. I won't miss them when they come to town.
The bands were good, the sound was good, the atmosphere was good. Wish there more food to choose from and not just cheese or pepperoni pizza, which were kinda salty and the drinks were a bit overpriced, but nonetheless, the experience was well worth the money. Great job!
Seeing these guys was an amazing experience! If you get the chance to go you have to! Great musicians at a great venue. We’ll definitely be going the next time they’re in town!
This venue and this band deserve a better crowd. Vast majority of people there were stiff as a board listening to some of the most intense demonic symphonies that the world has to offer. Me personally, i did my best but could not contain my wrathful enthusiasm at these beautiful people expressing the pain and anger of their countless ancestors destroyed by the cold, destroyed by war, destroyed by the unstoppable cruelties of life. Any and every repressed emotion within me was released that fateful night. All this goes for Apocalyptica and Leprous. Absolutely mind boggling performances. May God bless each and every one of them.
It was way better than I expected. The first band was not so much, but it improved with each one. The venue was amazing too. Who knew cellos and drums could make that amazing show?
This was by far the best concert I've been to. We are definitely wanting to see them in concert again. Everything was amazing and the energy was fantastic. We heard new music we hadn't heard before that we really liked and we love finding new music to listen to.
I will be honest I only attended this concert for the supporting band, "Leprous". When I arrived the opener who was a band named "Wheel" was playing and they were amazing as well. Honestly, the venue, the ticket scanning and layout was perfect. I have zero complaints other than I drove three hours one way to attend this show. It was worth every dollar and every mile.
Apocalyptica , was expecting a great show. Far surpassed that. Blew me away, some serious talent!
We actually saw Apocalyptica earlier in the year when Lacuna Coil opened, and they were fantastic. We went back to see them again later in the year, because Leprous was touring with them. They were also opened by Wheel, who did sound as expected and like their CD. Leprous is currently touring without a bassist, but were awesome. I was a little worried during the first song, because something didn’t quite sound right, but it was quickly corrected. And, lastly, Apocalyptica was better than they were at the beginning of the tour. They had a solid, entertaining performance and a few differences from the earlier shows. Frankie actually played the drums for a bit, and they brought Leprous’s cellist on stage. Worth the time and money all the way.
I bought the tickets because Franky Perez was supposed to be with them. In fact he's the only reason. I sat through 2 bands that were ok. Only to have them tell us Franky wasn't there. Now I understand this wasn't ticketmasters or TLA's fault but some kind of notice would've been nice. I spent about 200$ to sit in the most uncomfortable seats on the planet for nothing.
Did not disappoint. Apocalyptica was everything I hoped for and more. I could have stayed and watched another hour. Great night of progressive metal with Wheel (reminded me of Tool), avant garde metal with Leprous and symphonic metal with Apocalyptica. My wife even enjoyed it. I will definitely catch Apocalyptica next time they are in the area.
These guys are high energy, deliver a positive message to the crowd, and are just all around a feel good group. Their music is amazing.
disappointed that Franky Perez was not with the band at this show but the lead singer for Wheel did a decent job of filling in for him. He actually sounded a lot better when he sang with Apocalyptica than when he sang with his own band Wheel. The opening band Wheel wasn't very good, their instruments were way to loud so they drowned out the singer who it turned out has a good voice. The second band, Leprous, just didn't sound good to me. Possibly some of my disappoint with the opening bands was caused by the overpoweringly loud instruments and the extremely distracting lights that kept shining right into my eyes form the stage. Apocalyptica sounded great, their show was great, the coordination on stage between the members, the sound and lighting was excellent. I enjoyed their original songs but I do wish they would have played more Metallica and other covers because it is so unique how they put their own incredible sound to the iconic songs.
It’s was definitely one of the best concerts I’ve seen from them :)
The band has been around for awhile now and the members have a contagious spirit of passion and life. I was left feeling good for days.
