Tropidelic in Concert
Tropidelic are surefire party-starters, talented instrumentalists, and an easy answer to the question of whether there are any good reggae bands from Cleveland, Ohio. The group — comprised of singer Matthew Roads, trombone player James Begin, guitarist Bobby Chronic, drummer Darrick Willis, trumpet player Derek McBryde, and bassist David Pags — formed in 2008 on the campus of Kent State University. They didn't have the horn section yet, but they still became college favorites, and they continued their success by moving to Cleveland after graduation.?
At the time, no one in the city sounded quite like Tropidelic. Their sound has always been rooted in warm, groove-heavy reggae, but they quickly added funk, hip-hop, and even a little rock to their repertoire. They debuted this fusion on ‘Rebirth of the Dope,' their self-released first EP, and sold 10,000 copies at concerts and street corners around the Midwest. ‘All Heads Unite,' their first album, came out in 2011, and they've followed it with four more: ‘Police State,' ‘Go Down With the Ship,' ‘The Hard North,' and ‘Heavy Is the Head.'?
‘Police State,' from 2015, was the breakthrough, mixing chill beats with serious lyrics about the personal ("Alcoholic") and the political ("Police State," inspired by an incident in which cops raided their practice space because of an incorrect warrant). On "Alcoholic," they were joined by Bumpin Uglies, who have since taken the younger band under their wing — and along on several tours.?
This is a group of self-described road dogs, and they've brought their sound outside Cleveland city limits as part of Warped Tour and Electric Forest, and in support of acts like Slightly Stoopid and 311. Closer to home, they host the annual Freakstomp Music Festival, helping Ohio unlock its inner reggae jam-band vibrations. Their next album is set to be released in the spring of 2019, and they post on Instagram and Twitter as @Tropidelic.

Amazing music reggae rock funk hip hop all in one Tropidelic always brings it
Great show, venue, and crowd. Definitely be on the lookout for when these guys return.
Always love seeing Tropidelic, They bring a lot of energy and have some great sing along songs. I was pleasantly surprised by the Quasi Kings and hope to catch them again soon! The venue had plenty of space and bartenders to keep us happy all night. We'll definitely head back there for another show in the future.
Was impressed with the organization of both venues. Got in and out quickly and they gave each of us $6 towards parking. And the bands were awesome!!
My 7th Tropidelic show in 11 months, and they keep getting better in better. Each show has a unique setlist, with a constant influx of new, old, and reimagined songs to keep things fresh. The band exude endless energy, whether it’s a 30 minute supporting set or an 80 minute headlining show like this performance at Bernie’s Beach Bar. The band always hang out after the show to meet and chat with fans making for an unforgettable experience!
Tropidelic & Jarv were amazing, as was the venue (Bernie's Beach Bar, Hampton Beach, NH). They are super talented and entertaining. The show was fast paced and high energy!
Missed Tropidelic at a local festival and made sure to catch them for NYE. I didn’t familiarize myself with them before the show and was surprised how different they were from my assumption. Tropidelic surpassed all expectations and we will be back to see them next year! You can count on an amazing performance from these energetic guys.
The venue was beautiful, the artist lineup was perfectly curated. And for the performers extremely entertaining. Best night I've had in years.
Tropidelic put on a great show passafire and the Palmer squares are way better than your average opening band Loved the line up and everybody absolutely slayed their set
