Tony! Toni! Toné!
What makes a music legend? Perhaps it’s the ability to leave an inimitable, lasting imprint on the world. By that definition, Tony! Toni! Toné!’s contribution to music is most certainly legendary: a group regarded the world over as a talented, authentic group of musicians who made some of the best R&B music of the 80's and 90's. From fun, upbeat, smash hits like Feels Good, to blues-leaning classics like The Blues to their signature love ballads like Anniversary, the sound of Tony! Toni! Toné! is soulful, organic, classic, and instantly recognizable. Their ability to create songs that perfectly married the stylings of the soul and funk gods of the 70's with the technology and hip-hop infused R&B of the 90s made them icons of their generation.
The group released five albums in all, including Who? (1988), The Revival (1990), Sons of Soul (1993), House of Music (1996), and Hits (1997). After their debut album, the trio quickly expanded their roles as singers and musicians to songwriters and producers of their music, leading to their distinctive sound and timeless songs that remain in rotation on radio stations today.
The Tony's stats are impressive by any music industry standards, past or present: 14 Billboard-charting R&B singles; including five number one hits, and three top ten pop singles, one gold album, two platinum albums and one double platinum album, and over six million albums sold. Tony! Toni! Toné! also enjoyed success from song placements on several movie soundtracks during the 80s and 90s, including, Boyz in the Hood, House Party II, Jason's Lyric, The Mask, Panther, and Poetic Justice. They’ve also amassed an impressive number of awards, including a 1991 NAACP Image Award for "Vocal Group of The Year," a 1991 American Music Award for "Favorite R&B/Soul Group," and an ASCAP Award for their single, Feels Good.
Great Show!!! The group engaged the audience. Played every single song I liked, dance on and off stage.
The show in terms of the music was good energy. Everybody was up on their feet dancing and singing. That part was great. The person that replaced Raphael is not that good. I’m not saying he has an horrible voice, but it’s definitely not Rafael‘s voice and I bought tickets thinking that I was going to see the original members. There was only one original member which was Dwayne Wiggins so I was very disappointed that I didn’t see Raphael Saadiq and I do feel like, they should let people know that because the people that I spoke to were expecting to see him as well. The concert was good because I knew all of the songs and I was able to sing along, but had I known that Raphael Saadiq was not going to be a part of the show I would have not gone to the show.
I thought the group sound great they perform very well the show was very well put together.
I think I was hoodwinked. I bought my tickets about three months before the show. During that time, it was advertised as Tony Toni Tone. The description talked about the whole group and it's accomplishments. As the weeks grew closer to the show and after tickets damn near sold out, it was advertised as Tony Toni Tone featuring Dwayne Wiggins. The description then talked about Dwayne Wiggins and the group's accomplishment. The tone changed. That was intentional. I think the artist knew all along that Saadiq wouldn't be there and made it vague in the beginning of ticket sales so they could sellout. They should have advertised it as featuring Dwayne Wiggins from the beginning. At least that way I could've decided, knowing all of the information, if I wanted to see one Tony and his house band. Raphael Saadiq was not apart of the show and that was a bummer. The concert felt like Dwayne Wiggins featuring his house band. We had a decent time but I just wish the artist and the promotions group would've been honest with the consumers from day one. It didn't feel authentic.
Disappointed but it was still a great show. I was on my feet half the night and screaming the songs the rest of the way. Staff was amazing. Very helpful and attentive.
We should have been told that the lead sing Rafael was not going to be there. The only reason I went to see them is because he was with them at the Fox. They had a Phoni look alike on the stage to throw people off. The Tony with the guitar just want to be the center of attention. But he’s not! The Toni that was singing lead was not all that. Rafael made the group with his voice. I wish y’all well with him. Smh
I attended the Detroit concert on 8/9/24 with my daughter; we did not buy tickets to see Tony (Dewayne) and 2 imposters. We bought tickets to see Tony! Toni! Tone! It’s not fair to do this and not inform the public of the changes. My daughter and I were at last year concert and we were so excited for this one, we were VERY DISAPPOINTED! Tony! Toni! Tone, you are better than this and we expect and deserve better from you!
It was exciting and exhilarating as per usual… had a great time singing along and dancing to my favorite “FEELS GOOD” can’t wait to see them again!!!
I feel it would be great to know ahead of time if the main member of a group will not be there. I only purchased the tickets for Tony Toni Tone because of Raphael Saadiq. To learn that he was not there at the concert was not cool.
Love Tony! Toni! Tone! They were awesome. Just wish there was an opening show. We got out early because they did 1 set. So when they were done it was still early for us. I know Detroit don't show emotions a lot when performers are performing but we groove so this was a great show. One other thing though. . . I wish Raphael was there to sing "Detroit Girl"
