Monday, August 5, 2024, was a magical night for me as I attended an Elton John tribute show at the iconic music venue, The Troubadour in West LA.
It wasn’t just any tribute show, it was the tribute show conceived by Brit Tom Cridland - “Eltom John” - widely considered THE BEST Elton John tribute show. Like Elton John’s three-piece original band, Tom’s tribute show - Tom plays piano - has two other band members, Justin Woodward on bass, and Harry Michael on drums. They joined with Tom’s fine voice to create terrific harmonies reminiscent of that Elton three-piece, which produced an incredibly unique sound.
Tom and the band played hit after hit and they did so in a manner that would have made Elton proud, with enthusiasm, skill and love. Tom dressed very Elton-like in a pink suit with shiny rhinestones and appliqués - and glasses, of course! And Tom showed he knew his Elton history by including classic Elton antics such as playing from beneath the piano with one hand and playing while stretching out a leg atop the keyboard. It’s gymnastics and musical performance rolled into one!
It was at the Troubadour, 54 years ago, that Elton John on piano, accompanied by Nigel Olsson on drums and the late, great Dee Murray on bass, performed the songs composed by Elton and Bernie Taupin in England over the previous few years. This was the band’s first American appearance and supposedly Elton’s backers’ final attempt to launch him into relevance and maybe stardom. Elton and the boys blew the roof off and Elton, who was starting to get known in England, was catapulted to fame. LA Times Music Critic Robert Hilburn was in the house that first night and began his review with one word: “Rejoice!”
When I learned from one of my Elton fan websites that several fans were planning to attend Tom’s show, I leaped at the opportunity. No way I was missing this.
Tom’s show did not disappoint. There was a huge surprise for fans at the end, one that set my heart aflutter. For the last song of the set, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” surprise guest Nigel Olsson, who was with Elton on that very stage 54 years ago, made a surprise appearance and played drums on the song. A friend of Tom’s, Nigel was greeted with thunderous applause. It was an incredible circumstance.
Tom and the band are currently touring throughout the U.S. Even without Nigel as a surprise guest, this show is so worth seeing. They play and sound great and you will be reminded in real time from a live stage why you fell in love with Elton and Bernie’s songs in the first place.
Believe me, you will rejoice that you made the great decision to attend Tom’s Elton Experience!
