An experience, building on the shoulders of a legend, heading into uncharted territory, good for the music.
I have been listening to Terrance Blanchard for years ( when he started out with Art Blakely Group ) . He has always been “ Way ahead on the Curve of New Music Directions “ ??. He reminds a lot like Miles Davis —always testing new frontiers and “ mashing up “ different kinds of music together to create new sounds . Therefore, you really have to “ listen “ to the music to really understand “ where things are going “ to really appreciate what you are experiencing. ?? Almost like the Journey of Life Itself ????.
My husband and I had tickets to the Terrence Blanchard concert at the Marcus Performing Arts Center, on Nov.3rd, 2021. We were excited because I did some research on this Artists. A We knew it was a treat to have this great talent bless our city. Also we were familiar with some of his musical scores in Spike Lee’s movies. “Let the games begin!” We were invited to the Pre-show Chat. Donald Driver was charismatic, yet gracious. Terrence Blanchard gave us a beautiful history of his life’s journey in music, opportunities, mentors, relationships, influencers in his life. He shared the stumbling blocks for African American Artists and the history of racism, marginalization in the “industry”. The monolith characterization that has stifled many talented African American Artists. I loved the parallels of professional athletes with profession musicians, he and Donald shared. Terrence’s genuineness and sincerity was palatable! He gave a first class Master Class! The camaraderie between he and Donald was sincere, genuine and very funny at times. To experience an artists from a personal place before the show, made the whole experience so much richer. I felt like I was attending a friend’s recital, definitely a deeper respect for him as an individual and his talent. The reception in the Green Room was lovely. Everyone was raving about the pre-show and how wonderful it was. The food presentation was beautiful an array of textures, savory, sweet and colorful treats. The food was delicious. The mixologist served politely, patiently and always friendly. There was plenty of room to sit or stand and the vibe was comforting. Donald Driver joined us, bringing his charisma and award winning smile. He took pictures and talked to everyone. Last but certainly not least the Terrence Blanchard show was fabulous. The string quartet was soothed like a balm. Each musician in Terrence show brought a distinct style and stood out on their own expertly. Terrence blew with his heart on fire. He gave a phenomenal performance. This truly was one of the best show dates we’ve experienced. Thank you so much! I
