TCU Horned Frogs Football History
The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs have had an impressive run of success since their first season in 1896. Between 1920 and 2022, the Horned Frogs have won 18 Conference titles and two National Championships in three appearances. The Horned Frogs' most sustained period of success came under the leadership of former head coach Gary Patterson. In his 21 seasons from 2000 to 2021, Patterson accumulated 181 wins to 79 losses and set the school record for career wins.
Despite going undefeated in 2010 with a perfect 13-0 record, TCU was denied the chance to compete for a National Championship but instead beat the Wisconsin Badgers 21-19 in the Rose Bowl, finishing that season No. 2 in the AP Poll. Two years later, TCU moved from the Mountain West Conference to the Big 12.
In 2022, led by first-year head coach Sonny Dykes, TCU went on a historic run, going 13-2 and losing in the National Championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs. Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting that season. To date, TCU has had one Heisman Trophy winner: Davey O'Brien, in 1938.
