Swervedriver better than ever
by JamesMP on 3/30/15Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5Adam Franklin and Swervedriver just keep getting better, smarter,- more powerful in their performance. This was not just a band replaying their songs from the early 90's- They did play songs from all 4 earlier albums, plus a few great ones from the one they just released, but every song was an intense structure of sound, re-invented each time they play it. Consistently loud, but not overwhelming-there were moments of shimmering beauty throughout and Adam floated his voice over and through each composition.
At the best times, the feeling was something like seeing a great jazz musician, like Miles Davis or Mingus play- a few minutes of explanation in cultured tones- then we are thrown into a sprawling, sonic experience.
The encore set featured a thrilling version of Last train to Satansville, the band's take on a classic blues theme turned into a sort of existential trip to mental hell, and a glorious re-invention of 'Duel" that as far as I can remember, finished the night.
