Suga Free is a must see
by Wolfberg on 11/17/14Joseph's Nightclub - Los AngelesWould like to see him perform more. I've seen him 3 times over the past 2 years, once as a surprised appearance with Snoop Dogg at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Fillmore Slim was in the house to watch the show, Snoop didn't perform any Snoop Lion songs but they were giving out Snoop Lion 4/20 posters. The highlight of that show for me, was the surprise appearance of Suga Free. Just hearing his songs brings a great energy out of the crowds, even when a portion of the audience doesn't know his work. For some reason I didn't feel he was as comfortable performing that night, he was focused but never got into it. It was like he was keeping up with it, he didn't seem as composed as Snoop Dogg (who is vocally one of the greatest performers hip-hop has to offer). However, my opinion of his performances changed when I saw him perform later with DJ Quik over live instruments at the House of Blues on Sunset it was clear that he performs best when with DJ Quik. When performing with DJ Quik he's happy, he's getting into the music and looks like he's having a fun time up there. He also interacts with the crowd in a very immersive way, at one point putting the mic on the mic-stand and putting it in the crowd. I'm talking about the microphone being right in your face. Great showmanship, truly a next level entertainer. I saw him perform more recently at a smaller venue in Hollywood. If you ever have an opportunity to see a star perform in a small venue make sure you make it a priority because the energy of hip-hop does much better in a small venue then it does in an arena where you're almost disconnected from the artist performing. During this performance I wasn't sure if he was rapping over backing vocals . .
