Ravi and the quartet were incredible. We really enjoyed the show and the venue.
Ravi Coltrane is out there, man. Really phenomenal! And Christian McBride is the MAN. Christian Sands and Ulysses Owens, Jr should be recognized as stars in their own right. Great sound at Royce.
Ravi and his Quartet were a jazz lover's delight, could have listened to them for hours. Then BOOM! Christian and His young lions get after IT!! That piano and those drums probably had to RETIRE after that performance cause they TORCHED! them!!!
It was good to see Ravi Coltrane for the first time, but when Christian McBride came on and Christian Sands started playing, the whole house was blown away. McBride also offered thanks to Whitney Houston and Miles Davis, among others, for giving us so much good sound. Well worth the insane hassle of buying a reserved ticket at Royce Hall.
I've listened to Ravi Coltrane's music in the past and was not disappointed. His jazz is quite ... modern (I am not sure if that's the right word). Also the choice of music of others that the quartet chose to play was in line with his, more contemporary jazz. Christian McBride trio, on the other hand, were so energetic! Their performance was spot on and perhaps drew more cheers than Ravi Coltrane Quartets. But that's probably because more listeners like me connected to his music more strongly than we did to Ravi Coltrane's.
The three played as one, but each so unique. A real delight - thank you Christian for bring together such terrific young talent. Unfortunately, a stark contrast from Ravi's perfunctory performance. So glad we stayed for the 2nd half.
Rave and his quartet gave the audience a wonderful concert. I loved the Murray's venue which lent itself to an intimate atmosphere.
Ravi is a a talanted musician with a confident style who emulates his dad's talent with an individualistic style of his own. His band is amazingly gifted, as well! Our evening at Belleayre Jazz Club listening and enjoying Ravi was a special, memorable way to spend our anniversary.
