The Charleston, SC-based quintet, performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. In Ranky Tanky’s hands, this style of music has been described as “soulful honey to the ears” (NPR) while being covered by the New York Times, NPR’s Fresh Air and The TODAY Show, who had the band on for a performance.
Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) are five lifelong friends from Charleston, South Carolina. They have achieved many firsts for South Carolina’s West African-rooted Gullah community since their formation, earning yet another milestone at the 2019 GRAMMY? Awards by taking home the “Best Regional Roots Album” prize for their sophomore release, ‘Good Time’. The album, which also hit #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart, combines songs carried down through generations in the Sea Islands of the Southeastern United States with the band’s own original compositions in the Gullah tradition.
Ranky Tanky includes: QUENTIN BAXTER (Drums & Percussion); KEVIN HAMILITON (Bass); QUIANA PARLER (Vocalist); CLAY ROSS (Guitar & Vocals); CHARLTON SINGLETON (Trumpet & Vocals).
I hope they will come back to NJ. I am recommending everyone to see Lisa Fisher!
What a heart-warming experience to see five home-grown musicians at the top of their game, playing music all over the world and winning awards doing it. They deserve every honor and award they are getting. Such talented and brilliant musicians, all five of them! Amazing concert.
Everyone in Ranky Tanky is supremely gifted! Wonderful to be able to drink in the talent of our local, TWO-time Grammy Award winning Gullah group.
The vocals were clear, the energy and happiness to be in front of the audience was evident in their smiles and harmonies. Their sound reminded me of many a New Orleans’ groups. Tuba Skinny and Trombone Shorty just to name two. The venue was excellent the only fault that can be posted is there are no hard drinks, beer and wine only.
Very interesting show - so different from what the Fox Cities is used to. I loved their down-to-earth, happy, and thankful for what they have attitude.
Best night we’ve had at Jimmy’s so far. Ranky Tanky were everything we thought they’d be and so much more. Every single member of Ranky Tanky are incredibly talented and just a joy to see live. Do yourself a favor and see them live if they come to a venue anywhere near you. You won’t be disappointed.
Best way to start the year. First time at Jimmy's. Won't be the last! Free Spirit abounds at this Club. I heard a bad review from a friend once because they paid good money and people were rushed out after a short first set. Not with Ranky Tanky. They ruled the night. Hope they return again soon!
This was a wonderful performance! Wondering if the extra space between the stage and first row of seats could have been less unless this was requested by the performers. It is such a treat when there is an opportunity to be up and close to the stage and (for this show and venue) seems there was little need for dance space.
Very enjoyable evening at The Stagecoach Inn Museum. Learned the history of Gulag. So interesting.
