Pittsburgh Pirates History
Since their founding in 1881, the Pittsburgh Pirates have won five World Series and appeared in seven total, including the inaugural World Series in 1903. In 1909, “the Buccos” overpowered Ty Cobb's Detroit Tigers in a seven-game World Series to claim their first title. The Pirates would make subsequent successful runs in 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979. In that time, the team also won nine National League Pennants and nine NL East division titles. The Pirates moved to the NL Central division in 1994. The team qualified for three consecutive Wild Card games between 2013 and 2015.
Pittsburgh has fielded many Hall of Fame members, including Honus Wagner, Ralph Kiner, Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell. Seven Pirates players received the MVP Award, while Vern Law and Doug Drabek each earned the Cy Young Award, in 1960 and 1990, respectively.
