Matoma In Concert
Matoma's Tom Str?te Lagergren was born in 1991 in ?snes, Norway — hardly a major musical metropolis. But that hasn't stopped the electronic producer from developing one of the worldliest sounds in contemporary EDM: a sleek mixture of tropical house and radio-ready pop, with a considerable amount of hip-hop and dancehall mixed in.
What stands out most in Matoma's music is its melodic dimension — a direct result of the eight years he spent studying classical piano. In his childhood, he listened to rock and classic hip-hop; he began producing electronic music in his teens, having discovered trance artists like Ti?sto and Armin van Buuren through his older brother.?
Like a lot of fledgling producers, he got his start uploading remixes to SoundCloud; but unlike most, he racked up millions of plays within his first six months of posting. He notched his first major success in 2014 with "Old Thing Back," a slinky club remix of The Notorious B.I.G.'s 2007 song "Want That Old Thing Back" featuring Ja Rule and Ralph Tresvant. After going to No. 1 on Hype Machine, Matoma's breezy, sax-slicked rework ended up getting an official release in 2015.
From there, things really kicked off for Matoma. His list of collaborators quickly swelled to include Popcaan, Wale, Akon, Nico & Vinz, and Sean Paul. In 2016, he remixed Dua Lipa's "Hotter Than Hell" and landed the feel-good single "Wonderful Life (Mi Oh My)" on the soundtrack for The Angry Birds Movie.?
Following collaborations with Snoop Dogg, MAGIC!, and The Vamps — including the hugely popular "All Night," a new career milestone — Matoma pushed his sound in even more directions in 2018. He flirted with Latin rhythms on "I Don't Dance (Without You)" featuring Enrique Iglesias, explored delicate acoustic textures on "Losing It Over You" featuring Ayme, and even delivered slow-mo dembow with the Spanish-language "TelepatÃa" featuring Luis Figueroa.
Through it all, Matoma has kept his signature chilled-out vibe — in keeping with the Lion King reference "Hakuna Matata," which served as the inspiration for his name. The meaning of the phrase? "No worries," of course.
Matoma never came on; it was 1am (with a 930 doors open) and Matoma never came on. Bars in Boston close at 2am, so if Matoma was a guest, he would've had less than an hour to play. If I knew that he was a guest, I wouldn't have bought tickets to watch a mediocre act for 3+ hours.
Poorly organized venue, waited in line for over an hour in freezing cold with minimal movement in the line. It was so uncomfortable despite being bundled up that we left without entry. Poorly communicative and inefficient event staff. The Grand seemed unprepared for abundance of fans. I love Matoma and was so sad that I couldn’t see him.
The concert was super fun, but I came to listen to Matoma, not other random songs. He played small portions of his music but maybe was trying to cater to the masses by playing other popular mainstream songs? Wish he played more of his own stuff.
My ears are ringing 5 days after the concert. It’s never been this bad before. I wasn’t even that close to the speakers. They definitely caused the audience hearing damage that night

I was really excited for this concert and was disappointed I wasn’t able to watch him perform. The doors opened at 12pm and I showed up at 1pm with them telling me they weren’t open yet. This is fine I just waited for an hour for the doors to open and for the them to set up. It was an outdoor venue and pool party in 90 degree weather with minimal shade. We then found out two hours later that Matoma was still not there and actually wasn’t even in the state at all. After waiting in the sun for multiple hours we couldn’t take it anymore and decided to leave to get some waters and food. Security then told us that if we were to leave they would not let us back in. We stayed for a few more hours but unfortunately couldn’t handle the hunger. We left at around 7pm and he still wasn’t there! Very disappointed and upset
Some of the costumes where pretty cool. The DJ was disappointing. I was one of the few still trying to dance. Overall we got bored and left around 11 pm. I won’t be spending my money on tickets for this next year.
When we got to casino we had to wait to be let in...we got there early because we wanted to get good seats. Then when we were let in the was no one there to tell us where to go. I was so frustreated i just left.
I loved to see everyone's costumes and how creative they were and the people were very friendly. However, I was very disappointed in the music, it was not a diverse selection. The contest I think was set up to cater "who you know" because most of them selected for certain categories.. I seen way better costumes that should of won. It was not worth the money spent, but I made it a memorable one.
I went to this event primarily for the costume contest as it was advertised as a $10k contest with 5 categories, each with $1k 1st place and a grand prize winner taking home $5k. There were some amazing costumes including pirate zombies, a jellyfish, and other "shipwrecked" type costumes but the "winner" of the shipwrecked category as a guy dressed as Tom Hanks from Castaway. What I thought was a shoe in for the grand prize winner was an awesome Groot costume that was over 8 ft tall. He was on the dance floor the whole night, interacting with other people, taking lots of photos, etc. But he didn't even place in the Creative category let alone the grand prize category. The Grand Prize was given to a fire truck that was literally a cardboard box on casters. It had flashing lights and also said, "Twenty Years Later" on the side, so they played the 9/11 card, but it looked like a prop and not a costume. Not to mention the fact that it was never in the ballroom with the other guests until right when the "winners" were announced. It would have been much better if the contest winners were based on audience applause instead suspect judging. What a shame.
