Overwhelming musicianship; excellent show.
by PHF on 9/30/24The Lyric Theatre - BirminghamThese are four stupefyingly-great musicians and singers. Kenny Vaughan is a genius-level guitarist -- just technically flawless. I've never seen ANYbody else do to a 12-string what he did... And Marty Stuart? Whatever you play, or if you sing, I don't care who you are, but Marty can do it better. He's a fine singer, a great showman, a stunningly fine guitarist, and perhaps the finest living mandolin player. Handsome Harry Stinson and Chris Scruggs provide a superb rhythm section, and contribute mightily to the vocal array. I loved the song selection -- as a lifelong Byrds fan, I was overjoyed to hear several songs from their catalog, and the band brought life to classics like "Six Days on the Road"and "Mama Tried". Marty is nothing if not a generous band leader; he gave each member of the band the spotlight to do lead vocals on a couple of songs, and some of those were genuine highlights. Oh, and good grief, can these guys harmonize??? There was an an intimate, acoustic portion of the concert that highlighted their harmonies...Beach Boy-like. I'll just close by saying that the "Fabulous"adjective in the band name is no brag -- just fact. These guys ARR fabulous! No dancers, no smoke or flames, no big light show, no props, no backing musicians...Marty and the band step out and simply overwhelm you with the power of music.
