About
Louisiana State University Tigers Football History
Louisiana State University first fielded a football team in 1893, and they were named the Tigers during the 1896 season. Coach Paul Dietzel led LSU to some of their greatest successes in the ’50s, installing a three-platoon system that helped the Tigers to their first national title in 1958, while halfback Billy Cannon won the Heisman Trophy playing for the school in 1959. LSU has continued to be a force to be reckoned with in recent years. In 2003, coach Nick Saban led the Tigers to their second national title at the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma, 21-14.?
From 2005 to 2016, coach Les Miles earned LSU a reputation for top-notch recruiting by bringing in future NFL players such as Patrick Peterson, Leonard Fournette and Odell Beckham Jr. The 2007 LSU Tigers won the program’s third national championship, defeating Ohio State 38-24, in the BCS National Championship Game. In 2019, the Tigers went 15-0 and won their fourth national championship, led by future NFL quarterback and LSU’s second Heisman Trophy recipient, Joe Burrow.
