Avant-pop goddess Julia Holter masterfully fuses disparate genres like folk, jazz, chamber music, and lo-fi electronica to arrive at her stunningly singular sound. In concert she brings her intricately crafted songs to life with a phenomenally talented backing band comprised of an upright bassist, a violinist, and a drummer. Holter herself assumes keyboard duties, deftly tapping out intricate and evocative passages while casting her ethereal, agile voice over the impressively rich mix of elements. Her music’s complex time signatures and enigmatic lyrics make for a cerebral listening experience, but the low-key manner in which she introduces each song and cracks jokes make her concerts approachable for fans of all stripes. From the off-kilter beat of “Silhouette” to the lushly gorgeous vocals of “Feel You”, Holter is the embodiment of musical virtuosity, and her concerts are a must-see for any fan of envelope-pushing experimental pop.

Los Angeles-born Julia Shammas Holter attended the city’s Alexander Hamilton High School Academy of Music before going on to study composition at CalArts. She’s been a critical darling from the outset of her career – her 2011 debut album Tragedy, which she recorded alone in her bedroom, was named one of NPR’s “Best Outer Sound Albums of 2011”. The praise continued with her 2012 sophomore album Ekstasis, which drew comparisons to luminaries like Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, and Joanna Newsom. Critical acclaim gave way to commercial success with her third album, 2013’s Loud City Song – the record made its way onto the charts in several European countries and led to extensive touring. The current apex of her success, however, came in 2015 with the release of her fourth album Have You in My Wilderness, which peaked at No. 20 on the UK Albums Chart and was hailed by critics as one of the year’s best albums. As renowned for her masterful live shows as she is for her stunning recordings, Holter continues to dazzle with her brilliant songwriting, gorgeous voice, and world-class musicianship every time she tours.

by MusicFan on 5/22/24The Atlantis - WashingtonThe Atlantis is a small, intimate homage to the original 9:30 Club. I had flashbacks just standing in there! It’s an awesome venue for lots of indie, rock bands, etc. I’m not sure it was the best space for Julia Holter. Julia and her fellow musicians were excellent, but I think I would have enjoyed her music more in a symphonic hall setting, like the Strathmore. Her music is very intricate and experimental and I would have liked to listen more carefully.

by Alex P on 5/22/24The Atlantis - WashingtonI’ve had the pleasure of seeing Julia Holter more than a couple times at venues across DC and twice at the incredible Moog Fest (RIP) over more than a decade. Every time is a moving and unique performance that I find hard to describe with words. Mainly because it feels like such a complete and beautifully unique expression that defies genre. The arrangements for live performance are captivating and bring a vitality to the album recordings. The variations in instrumentation through the years has been a delight to see. Whenever possible I will seek out seeing Julia Holter live, fantastic stuff.

by knyc80 on 2/27/16Bowery Ballroom - New YorkJulia Holter is an acquired taste, I love her mesh of different styles and genres that are centered on her delicate, wide eyed joy of music. I missed her previous area show and was glad she came by again with a much fuller set of 16 songs consisting mostly from her new record. She threw in some welcomed oldies. The band was terrific and the sound was enhanced with backing vocals from the violinist, Deanna Maccabe. Opening act, Mary Lattimore was also quite good and the time flew by.

The range of styles present in her songs are really a treat and her voice is mesmerizing. The new additions to her live-lineup are great and add even more sound dynamic to their live show. It was awesome to talk to the band after the performance, they are great people. Jessica Pratt is opening for Julia Holter on this tour and I am happy to have discovered her from the show. I would very much recommend this to people I know, they are making some very unique and beautiful music.

by Anonymous on 9/2/12Bowery Ballroom - New YorkI would recommend seeing her in a smaller venue with better sound mixing. The levels were terribly unbalanced. And she needs a drummer that is more musically connected with her, helps draw out more of a range of dynamics and a sense of tension/release.
