Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre
While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Ana?s Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.
About the Show
In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.
While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.
A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.
Honestly best experience ever, it’s the tragedy I know and love. 10/10 would recommend. Cried all of throughout the second act.
We attended the show on Valentine's Day which happens to be my birthday and we couldn't have asked for a better experience! Our seats were in the Right Mezz (D 26)and we could see everything perfectly! Will be back many more times to see the show!
I can not understand what all the hype is about regarding this show. Did not like it at all!!
We enjoyed the music and the staging. Seats are a little snug! The script/story is weak and the love story between Orpheus and Euridyce was hard to believe, not fully developed. "Why We Build The Wall" is the best song in the show, but was performed in a very overwrought fashion. I've heard it sung as the folk song it was originally was, and found it much stronger that way. Eva N has a wonderful voice. Amber Gray was out. Patrick Page is menacing enough. Reeve Carney was a little too jittery for my taste.
Amazing performance from start to finish with an amazing cast!
To the entire cast: I have been to many shows on Broadway, but I have NEVER been to a show with as many incredible voices assembled in one place at one time. I was in AWE!! I did not want it to end!!!! THANK YOU!
Great performance bursting with energy. Rousing music. Talented individual performers. Just remember, it is based on a Greek Tragedy.
This show deserves all the accolades you have heard plus some. The stage is incredible. The acting, singing, and dancing are fabulous. The live musicians are outstanding. What are you waiting for!?! Take the journey now!
I could go to this show every week! The music is incredible, the singing and actors are powerful, and the story is creative and so relevant. This show (and Hamilton) are the only shows that I want to go to again and again. This time I took my husband and in-laws, and all were astounded and delighted. Everyone is now listening to the music all the time. I would recommend not listening to the music ahead of time...and all you need to know is listed in the playbill so don't search ahead of time. It is beyond fabulous!!!!
I cannot describe the joy I felt watching this show. The music is a blast, the cast is amazing, the set is massiv. But the energy and chemistry between actors, choire and music makes is the best part. It's a machine that runs buttersmooth. I loves every second!!! Totally recommend. Cause they're gonna sing it again and again...
The highly-miked performance blasted in my ears -- made the performance uncomfortable, rather than unforgettable. When performance was quieter, whether sung or spoken, I found the show compelling. Please turn down the volume -- or engage performers who don't need mikes or use them better, especially in a relatively small house.
Theater, albeit small AND beautiful, well handled for a full crowd. Show is soo creative, performed and directed by such talent. Musical direction and lighting extraordinary.
The music and performances by the actors is so incredibly fun, endearing, heartbreaking... the stage is also beautiful. Do yourself a favor and go experience this show - especially while the original cast is there!
Great seats, fabulous show, wonderful performers. So glad we made it out to see Hadestown on Broadway!
I’m 53 and have seen a lot of shows. Hadestown is by far my favorite.
Inspirational story, stunning voices and great use of versatile stage, so glad to have seen with original Broadway cast.
As a person who was never really a fan of Greek mythology, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this show. I have seen many Broadway shows in a have to say that this was probably my favorite! I did not want to end! But when it did, we had the joy of meeting four of the actors at the stage door. They could not have been more gracious or accommodating. They are as lovely in real life as they were on the stage!
Amazing cast! Every person was perfect in their role and gave an amazing performance. Watching them perform renews my hope in humanity. If people can be this talented then surely we have the talent to solve even bigger issues. Go see this show now! It is a great musical and an even better cast!!
Loved seeing Andrea Deshields perform! Everyone was very talented, but Andre is a legend!
Wasn’t sure what I was expecting on a Wednesday night, but I’ve rarely felt such intense engagement from the audience. The writing for this show is so good, the actors are flawless, the show design is gorgeous...I loved it.
