Emarosa In Concert
Good luck trying to pin down exactly how to categorize Emarosa. Since forming in 2006, the Lexington, Kentucky-based sonic chameleons have evolved from post-hardcore-leaning metalcore aficionados into a sleek, soulful pop-rock band with designs on the Top 40. It's not the usual path for a band versatile enough to open for A Day to Remember and PVRIS ? but, then again, Emarosa has endured by being accepting of change.
The band's first three albums, starting with 2008's Relativity, appeared via Rise Records. Beginning with 2016's 131, Emarosa has linked up with Hopeless Records. This label shift also signaled a creative leap: 2019's Peach Club kicks off with "Givin' Up" ? a strutting mainstream pop song with a warm chorus falsetto and an R&B/funk vibe ? and "Don't Cry," a slice of retro electro-rock.
Perhaps even more notably, Emarosa has weathered multiple lineup shifts over the years, with lead guitarist ER White being the sole original founding member still on board. Of the alums, 2007-2011 vocalist Jonny Craig ? known for his tenure in Dance Gavin Dance and Slaves ? and touring live guest vocalist Tilian Pearson are perhaps Emarosa's most famous former members. Emarosa is good at recruiting high-profile members, too. In 2014, ex-This Or the Apocalypse guitarist Matthew Marcellus joined the lineup.
Live, Emarosa incredibly handles all sides of their sound, with the pop-oriented material inciting mass pogos and the heavier side coming across as appropriately gruff and menacing. The former represents where the band shines, since their more light-hearted instrumental vibe lets Emarosa loosen up and have fun. As the group continues to move forward and gain momentum with Peach Club and points beyond, maintaining this spirit of levity and contentment will go a long way toward keeping Emarosa in the spotlight yet grounded in musical reality.
