Dokken on Tour
Back in 2016, LA pop-metal pioneer Don Dokken put the 21st-century iteration of his eponymous band on pause and reunited its classic ‘80s version for a tour of the country where they were most warmly received in their heyday: Japan. The trip resulted in a live album, Return to the East (a sequel to 1988's iconic, Grammy-nominated concert set, Beast from the East) as well as this lineup's first new recording together in over 20 years, "It's Another Day." The reunion proved to be short-lived — guitarist George Lynch returned to the group he'd been leading since the ‘90s, Lynch Mob, while original drummer Mick Brown hung up the sticks for good in 2019. But this band has survived many personnel changes before, and Dokken have entered the 2020s with a revamped roster that includes guitarist Jon Levin (Don's right-hand man since the early 2000s) and the House of Lords rhythm section of drummer BJ Zampa and bassist Chris McCarvill.
Dokken Background
Some people are just born with perfectly rock ‘n' roll names, and when Don Dokken's first group, Airborn, were forced to rebrand due to legal issues in 1978, he wisely went with his surname as a replacement. Over the next decade, Dokken would become a one-word shorthand for ‘80s pop-metal in all its shrieking, fist-pumping glory. But before they became fixtures of the Sunset Strip scene, Dokken cut their teeth in the notorious metal hotbed of Germany, where the band recorded their first album, 1981's Breaking the Chains (and where Don burnished his powerful pipes in recording sessions with Scorpions). Two years later, the album was re-released in the US through Elektra Records, introducing stateside audiences to Don's melodically majestic vocals and guitarist George Lynch's dexterity with muscular riffs and shredtastic solos. As the hair-metal explosion raged through the ‘80s, the band would become fixtures on MTV thanks to the crunch-rock confections like "In My Dreams" and the epic power ballad "Alone Again." The group's golden period came to an end in 1989 when Lynch departed to form his own band, Lynch Mob, and Don released his solo debut. But since then, Don has kept the Dokken name alive for over four decades through a series of reinventions and reformations, demonstrating his undiminished desire to get your fists and cigarette lighters in the air.
Band was great Don with good and lost a little and George was awesome. You can tell George and Don. Are not fans of each other. Haha
Nice intimate venue where you can really be close to the stage. I've loved Dokken for decades and seeing George guest on 2 songs was a treat. It made me happy to see Don seemed in really good spirits. Yes, I know Don can't hit the notes he used to, but who can?!? He's a trooper!! Please bring Dokken back to the Golden Nugget Showroom again!
Don has lost his voice, it’s been this way for a while. This was billed as Dokken with George Lynch. Lynch showed up for the last 2 maybe 3 songs. Maybe this show should have been bill as “special guest appearance”. I went through the time and expense of securing front row seats only to be completely overrun by the crowd, half of which got free tickets from “fill a seat”. My wife got separated from me and had to watch the video screen from her seat in the front row. Paid for the front row but had to watch the video screen! Portions of the front row is dedicated to Handicapped individuals, they too got lost in the swarm.
So we get there early and once they started letting people in I see that my mobile tickets won't load. I guess a lot of people were having the same issue. We were at the handicap entrance as I am handicap with a heart condition. I had to trek quite a ways and down a hill to the box office where I had to "hurry up and wait"to get printed tickets. The IT issue with TM was affecting them as well. I also had VIP M&G tickets and the box office couldn't find those for me. Thank goodness I had printed that out at home. By the time I got myself back up that hill I could not breathe and had a very rough time for the rest of the night. Now as for the show...Steel Heart was great. I really enjoyed them but the sound wasn't great. Winger was AMAZING!! They were entertaining and funny, even with technical difficulties. Warrant was okay. That's all I have for them and honestly, I left before Dokken came onstage. I have seen Dokken MANY times over the years and most of my friends assured me that Don Dokken's voice is shot. I really didn't care if I saw them or not as I have known Don Dokken to have a serious "ego/a-hole"issue. What I will never understand is why Winger wasn't the headliner or at least had second billing. They were more successful than Warrant and had more recognizable hits. Winger was the highlight for sure.
I went to this show out of a desire to revisit seeing these bands with nostalgia in mind. I didn’t have high expectations because I have seen all these bands back in their prime and I didn’t expect them to sound exactly the same. I was pretty impressed with Steelheart and Winger’s sound but Warrant and Dokken were a disappointment. Although Warrant sounded good musically, the vocals were something to be desired. As far as Dokken goes, Don can’t sing anymore and really needs to hang it up. I love Dokken and he was great , but he just can’t do it anymore. Anyone seeing them for the first time at this show had to be severely disappointed and Don’s legacy is going to be damaged if he doesn’t just stop. I had fun and enjoyed the show for nostalgia purposes but I will not see them again.
fun good and every enjoyable too iron stone is a very nice place to have these types of events too they need to have more of them in the future
First off, nice venue. Middle of nowhere. Drink choices were lame. Winger should’ve been the headliner even though I was there for Dokken. Warrant singer was too much but sounded good. All the musicians were solid. Don Dokken could barely walk on stage. It was hard to watch. The place pretty much cleared out half way through their set. George Lynch was advertised as part of the show but was not there. No explanation as to why. Total bummer since Dokken is my favorite 80s band. Time to retire.
went to Ironstone in Murphys to see Steelheart, Winger, Warrant, and Dokken. never been to this venue before and it was a very beautiful area, would highly recommend staying there and a great outdoor concert. Steelheart started and they were pretty good, then a break and then Winger and Warrant played, and they brought the house down. And Warrant played heaven, and dedicated it to the previous singer Jani Lane, Classy. Winger which still all the original band sounded awesome, and their sound had not changed at all. And then the Man we wanted to see Don Dokken. The band started to play kiss of death which they have opened many with I've seen and then here came Don, but had no energy and could barely move, I realize he's up in age but that crazy,Ive seen people that age move allot better. And then he started to I think sing and that was not him. He had no range at all and was very flat with no high note sang at all, he could not hit high notes anymore. It was sad to hear, I was very excited to see him and very disappointed. George Lynch was supposed to play also, another reason I went, and I heard he only played the last couple songs in the set. I don't know because we left after a few songs he tried to sing along with a lot of other guests and all said the same thing as we were walking out, he can't sing anymore, and that is not how I want to remember one of my favorite bands, seen them allot. But to watch him on stage was not a good thing at this concert it was hard to see him trying to move, and didn't want that memory of him, The concert verue I would go to again it was a beautiful area for a concert
First of all the show was a blast, beautiful venue, kind of hard to get there,I thought I was lost going through the one lane windy road to the venue but when I arrived I was amazed how beautiful the scenery was.the show started, sounded great, close up,dokken came in....what?? No George Lynch... bummer cause that's who I drove 3 hours to see.Don Dokken bless his heart couldn't sing those famous high note anymore due to some serious health issues, vocal surgery, cancer, back surgery but I gotta hand it to him he easily there dispute all he'd been through...what a trooper.his band sounded awesome anyway without Lynch..that's it.i wouldn't pay to see them again but if love to see more shows at the IronStone Amphitheater
A great venue , 4 bands which is great value for that show . Warrant absolutely were amazing as was Steelheart , Winger were very good . Dokken was good but sadly not the best headliner .Warrant would have been the best headliner . The buffet was first class , love the venue .
