Devin is an incredibly talented man as are his band members. The show was practically a comedy show and metal concert all rolled into one. Go see him if you get the chance! I promise it's worth every penny.
...and that was certainly true at this show. Stellar musicianship was on display as you'd expect, and his setlist consisted of several songs from the Empath album plus others spanning much of his solo career, and one song (the ever-popular "Love?") from his prior band Strapping Young Lad. This was a deliberately stripped-down production, so no huge displays or screens or flying banners, just Devy, his talented band...and a LOT of stuffed animals. In short, it was a great show.
Center stage sounds great! Will definitely be coming back to see upcoming bands that I like here. Everyone gets a great view
Can a 60+ scream DEADHEAD? The answer is: YES. Decades ago I listened to a then unknown group called Devin Townsend Project. Ocean Machine. The entire album was an addiction. Then I listened to Terria, to Ghost, to Casualities of Cool. Finally, I listened to DTP’s grandios live performance at the Royal Albert Hall, “ Funeral” and Bastard”. So it took me nanoseconds to decide to join the Center Stage show. And I was rewarded not only by a unique musical experience when Devin and Che and their collaborative musicians (Haken’s Keyboard player is a wizard!) conquered all our hearts, minds and souls within seconds. I was taken away by the artistic genius of all the musicians. This concert was something which was truly inspiring to me, as a listener and as a musician, too. This includes also the outstanding performance of Haken who showed us what it means to be a progrock band. My wife was hesitant when I asked if she would come with me to this show. After the concert her eyes were shining bright and she is a ProgRockMetalLivePerformance fan now. Thank you Haken, thank you Devin, thank you Che, thank you all who made this evening a BLAST!
Staff was unbelievably accommodating, providing seats, lines of sight, and assuring comfort. Especially the VIP manager. Im temporarily disabled from a spinal injury so mobility is limited. 5th time seeing Devin and this was the best by far. Set list, lineup, production, everything! I left this venue years ago mid show due to horrible sound. Theyve made some changes to the venue,FOH system, and staff leaving it now one of the best mid size venues in NC IMO. Best Dev experience ever.
The musicians and master Devin are simply amazing. The setlist covers the full career of Devin from SYL. You will find Heavy, Rock, Country, Jazz... A unique experience for a unique musician.
Devin Townsend. What a performer! What a personality! HE is just as cool and funny as you have seen him on other live concert videos around youtube and such. He has an incredible rapport with the audience and is especially humble as a human. He'll serenade you with beautiful vocals in one tune and then melt your face with extreme metal the next. The band he has assembled for the Empath tour are top notch. Flawlessly tight as they make their way through tunes from DT, DTP, DTB, SYL and even Casualties of Cool. Che Aimee Dorval is great on vocals too! DT acknowledged several smaller kids (4-10years old) who were near the front during the concert. When it was time for SYL - LOVE?, he had the kids come up on stage with him and play with stuffed animals (which were decorating the stage by the dozens), as it was much safer that the soon to churn up mosh pit. He invited the parents to come and sit off the side of the stage so they weren't far from their kids. Being a dad too, he really showed his caring side. Haken and The Contortionist really added to the experience. They were great and gave a lot of energy to the crowd. Very tight and talented musicians to be sure. Thank you Devin for providing such a great catalog of incredible music for your fans, and for being such an entertaining performer live. You really gave your all, and connected with the group in a way not often seen by groups capable of playing a small club like The Underground when you easily sell out massive venues also.
The show was amazing overall. The staff at center stage was friendly and helpful, despite having to deal with a bunch of drunk people, haha. Devin was out of this world and the two opening acts were great as well. There was plenty of seating and room to stand if you wanted to. Absolutely worth it!
Unbelievable experience. I just barely missed the meet and greet due to traffic, which was my worst nightmare but the venue and Devin's management worked together and got my husband and I backstage to meet privately for a few minutes. Absolutely surreal and I can't be more grateful. Venue was perfect, show was incredible and an experience I'll never forget! <3
