BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Detroit-born Dej Loaf, aka Deja Trimble, was raised by her parents and grandmother on a steady diet of hip hop and jazz. Her father was killed when she was four years old, and at age nine she began writing music to channel her emotions. After dropping out of nursing school in 2011 to pursue music full-time, she made her debut in 2013 with the mixtape Just Do It. She followed up in 2014 with the track "Try Me", which got a major boost when Drake quoted its lyrics in an Instagram post. The exposure helped establish her as an emerging hip hop force, leading to a deal with Columbia records and a collaboration with Eminem. Critics took note -- in 2015 she was chosen as part of XXL Magazine's Freshman Class. Since then she's continued her rise, dropping her highly anticipated debut album #AndSeeThatsTheThing in summer 2015 and opening for Nicki Minaj on The Pinkprint Tour.
