Started listening to Dark Angel in 1987. Was too young to go to their tour with Death in '88 or '89 (too young to drive and no money) and hadn't had the chance to see them after that. But finally saw them now in June 2023. Did not disappoint. Was great, music was tight, and the singer doesn't appear to have lost any ability over time and sounds like I remember on a VHS from the 80s. All had good stage presence and Ron knows how to work the crowd. They played I think 5 songs or so before doing the Darkness Descends album in its entirety. Very surprising to me just how well their music is known to people younger than me. I was 17 years old the last time they put out an album and am 50 now. But people in their 20s and 30s knew the songs and which "came next" on the Darkness Descends album, which came out in 1986. There was a circle pit going for pretty much their entire set. Could get a bit cheesy at times with people trying to shove others as hard as they possibly can. I'm all for circle pits, slam dancing, moshing etc., but cheap shots to feel like some tough guy is just cheesy. Most people are cool but a few of them were aiming at me, probably because I don't look like a metal head. Metal/Punk is in part about rebellion and choosing not to conform, choosing to be your own person. Nothing says that more than looking like everyone else and singling out someone who doesn't conform and looks different. Sarcasm implied. Got to see prong for the second time. Still a great band with great songs. Crowd moved for them but not as much as I expected. Either way, the crowd was into them. Really mad I missed Whiplash. Another band I've been into since the 80's but haven't seen them yet. But had prior responsibilities so got there after their set but before Prong went on.
Best band I have seen this year. Great environment. Great interaction with the crowd. Come back soon!
I had hoped Dark Angel would up their game since the 3 L.A. warm-up shows..they did! Ron Rinehart's vocal and stage presence increased substantially by the time they played their one and only New York (and ultimately east coast gig). Gene Hoglan did not have to support audience interaction as he did on the CA dates. Hoglan was, as always, a powerhouse propelling the band at every bit the same breakneck speeds as back in the '80s. Eric Meyer also exhibited the shredtastic riffing I so craved, which had been hit or miss in L.A. Mike 'Gonz' Gonzalez delivered the stellar bass work we have come to expect with his unique hybrid finger/picking attack. The same could not be said for recently recruited Laura Christine (Gene's wife). While mostly familiar with the riffs, the interplay between her and Eric is the weakness keeping Dark Angel from being their best. At one point toward the end of No One Answers she loses her place in the song and there are several seconds of dissonance before she catches up. Her sense of timing is also in question as she would occasionally overlap Eric's leads during the solo exchanges mid-song which are a key element of the Dark Angel sound. When she did solo, it was often a generic blend of tapping and whammy dive bombs. She did not put the time into learning any of the late Jim Durkin's solos. Sad to think how many more talented guitarists would love to have her job. All told, still a great show. Not a fantastic one..but a great one.
It was awesome show, and the staff at the venue was great!
Dark Angel definitely lived up to the hype!!!! Insane energy, huge sound, insanely fast and precise, front man was a total pro great audience participation. Can't wait to see them again.
Another awesome night at the Teregram Ballroom. I've seen several concerts at this location and it has a nice vibe and a good layout where you can kick back at.
Although Dark Angel played for 3 days STRAIGHT, Friday and Saturday shows were amazing! First time seeing Dark Angel and they still sound the same after all these years. I’m hopeful they play again in Los Angeles!
Is one of the best trash metal bands this guys don’t play very often so when I hear they’re playing the LA area bought my ticket and they don’t disappoint.
