With five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations, Brittany Howard follows up her massively acclaimed solo debut Jaime with the new single "What Now" and teases what is to come from her upcoming album of the same name. Like Jaime (whose celebratory single "Stay High" earned a Grammy for Best Rock Song), What Now finds Howard once again taking the helm as producer and working closely with longtime collaborator engineer/co-producer/co-mixer Shawn Everett. The album emerged through a deliberately free-flowing process, with Howard doubling down on the unfettered creativity that's long defined her work. "I don't ever plan too deeply, but usually I show up with the songs almost fully formed," she says. "There was a lot of exploring sounds on the spot, and trusting that the right thing would come to us."
"What Now" takes on a potent urgency fueled by its syncopated grooves, blistering guitar riffs, and fiercely honest lyrics ("I've been making plans that don't include you anymore/My heart wants to stay but I don't know what for"). "'What Now' is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs," says Howard. "It's never my design to hurt anyone's feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it's a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time the lyrics are brutal."
There's a double meaning to the title of What Now. "With the world we're living in now, it feels like we're all just trying to hang onto our souls," says the Nashville-based musician and frontwoman for four-time Grammy Award-winning Alabama Shakes. "Everything seems to be getting more extreme and everyone keeps wondering, 'What now? What's next?'
loved hearing a bit of story from these artists and songs, fabulous show.
Brittany is a talent. Singing. Guitar. Band leader. She shows her skill throughout the entire show and has everyone on their feet throughout. Can’t wait to see Brittany again soon
Brittany came on just after the Summerfest fireworks on June 20 at the world’s largest music festival- she is a powerhouse! Her striving to achieve excellence has put her into the same group as Prince, MJ and Elvis! Perfectionists who have no limits- love her and her continued bravery and love Alabama Shakes! (Previous band)
Brittany Howard sounds amazing live. The band was jammin.
Brittany is a showstopper. Loved her. She is a real entertainer.
Musically complex, brilliantly played and passionately delivered.
It's far from a perfect venue, but Brittany blended into the seven fellow performers on stage at Summerfest way too far. Gone was the raw edge of Alabama Shakes which has been replaced by very skilled musicians that left us wondering "what song was that"feeling. Her drummer was exceptional but the mix put him in front of her voice throughout the set. Even a "soft"rant by Brittney was barely understandable. Not doing a single Shakes' song? She needs new management! Reminds me of when they took Big Brother out of Janis Joplin, but much worse.
See her live ! Great concert and venue .. Bryant covered her last two albums .
Saw her at Bonnaroo, worth the time and heat to see her perform. Still miss Alabama Shakes and was hoping for a one off reunion at this legendary festival, but still a good show.
And she took time to meet with a few fans after the show. Her vocals and guitar work amazing. Who could ask for more?
